Juno 18— The mile purse which brought to the post some speedy ones was the headliner of todays racing offering and was witnessed I y an immense crowd that included a host of visitors to view tomorrows initial Fairmount Derby running. It was won by David I., after he had overcome some early bad racing luck, but he won well under restraint from Kawn o Virginia, with Princess Pan in third place. The mile in 1 ::..»% was only a fraction less than the track record. Cloudy weather, but a fast track prevailed and spirited racing and fast time was the order in ttuse races where the better grade of racers contested. The H . D. lirown colors were again in the limelight, his home-bred Shasta Farm youngsters accounting for both the juvenile purses raced for this afternoon. His successful representatives were Shasta Pock and Shasta Negra. The former had a comparatively easy time of it, but Shasta Negra had to register his success in spectacular style, and he only won by a slight margin from the fhula Vista Stables Sweepover. Shasta Rock was an extreme outsider but had ample public support, and his victory was attended by considerable jubilation in the rank and file. Shasta Pocks success was the only solace for those with a liking to back outsiders, the remaining winners being all from the ranks of favorites or second choices. iKEAT FINISH. .T. C MeG ills Puban Pouge gave another sensational exhibition to come from far back in last place to win by a nose from Foolscap, with Champignol in third place. Puban Tlougc appeared hopelessly out of It for the first thr.e quarters but, when he finally began racing at his best speed, he came with a terrific rush that brought him around the others like a whirlwind. He was lucky at that to land the purse, and probably Whitacres overconfidence was a contributing cause in his victory. Champignol, which had contended strongly in the earlier stages. lasted long enough to beat Marsdale. The mile and a quarter was covered in L iOT1.. This was a reduction of eight and two-fifths seconds from the former track record. The mile and a quarter distance has not been raced frequently here. The favorite followers began auspiciously when they concentrated on Triplett as the probable one to land the purse. She did with ease, overhauling Shining Cold in the list sixteenth to win drawing out fast. Shining Cold was benefited by a hustling ride, displayed fine speed, but began tiring in the last sixteenth. Tailteann. an outsider, finished in third place. There was a delay at the post here due to the fractious acting of Wmancipation and Dukedom. The latteT was away slowly and closed an immense gap. With an equal start he would have been a strong factor. ANOTIIKK FOR H. T. IIROW. Another purse fell to H. D. Rrowns credit when his Shasta Negra graduated from the maiden ranks by beating seven others that tried conclusions in the second race. Shasta Negra had an advantage at the start and quickly moved into the lead, hut was passed in a flash by Colden Top. The latter had l een away slowly, but displayed high speed to race into the lead. He quit fast in the Stretch and it enabled Shasta Craney to win with ease from Prevail and Captain Applejack in third place. Good Times triumph in the sixth race was another of the hard fought variety, that Veteran getting up in the closing strides to outstay Stay On. after the latter had dis-X !:iyed fine speed and looked like the winner when rounding into the stretch. Jockeys M. Klston. C. Pliilpot and P. Jones divided riding honors for the day. Over Kirc again gave a sparkling exhibition In the closing race, which he won from a good hand of platers that started here. Batsman give him a stubborn argument and only sue -limbed in the last sixteenth. Meddling Mat tie. by virtue of her strong stretch rush, was pressing Batsman hard for second place l.athrop ra e«l poony and Oreat Puck was ncer formidable. harlcs W. Irimrose was a visitor at the . track this afternoon. He confirmed his appointment as steward of the Coney Island track, He leaves for Cincinnati Sunday. He also stated that he would not serve at the proposed Ieoria. 111., meeting. Joseph A. Murphy was among the visitors this afternoon.
