CHERRY PIE IN THRILLER ♦ Outlasts Cloudland in Best Finish of Aqueduct Meeting. ♦ Latter Would Have Won In Another Stride — Winners Come From Unexpected Sources. NKW YORK. N. T.. Juno IS.— Only overnight races were offered on the Fridays program at Aqueduct, but the handicap of the day over the mile and a sixteenth distance provided one of the greatest finishes of the year when old Cherry Pie from the Greentree Stable just nosed out J. S. Cos-dens Cloudland with Harrovian from the Sewkkly Stable well lapped on the pair of them, it was a program of seven races and while the weather was still uncomfortably cold for .Tune a big crowd was out. The track was at its best and while some of the winners came from unexpected quarters the sport was good. Just an even dozen went to the post in the mile and a sixteenth handicap and it was a horse race all the way. High Star, the light weight of the party, was rushed out into a long early lead, with Harrovian and Sanford chasing after him. the latter running along on the inner rail and under a slight restraint. Cherry Pie. further out on the track, was in fourth place and Son of John and Cloudland brought up the rear. TIKKS IV Till. STRI.TCII. When the stretch was reached High Star showed signs of tiring and Harrovian closed on him slightly. At the same time Cherry Pie was begniiing to circle around on the outside. McTaggart had Sanford on the rail and he was galloping strongly and both Cloudland and Son of John continued to follow the others. It was just inside the eighth post that, after High Star had collapsed utterly, Cherry Pie went into the command. The old fellow had headed Harrovian but the imported gelding was not through and when Harvey roused him he came again, keeping Cherry Ma exceedingly busy. These two were hard at it when Cloudland came with his belated rush. He was fairly running over them, but the move had come a stride too late and Cherry Pie was winner by a short nose, though Cloudland had beaten Harrovian by a neck for second place. A stride after the finish his head was In front of Cherry Pie, but the move had come just that much too late. The Cosden colt seemed to sulk in the early racing and had he raced cheerfully all the way he would probably have been the winner. It was a big field of cheap ones that came together in the opening six and a half furlongs dash, and there was no end of trouble in having a good alignment. When the barrier arose. Peach Maid and Harrisii did not start, while Scorcher went in the air* so badly as to have no chance. Reprisal was fortunate in being away on his stride, and Collins saved ground with him all the way, with the result that he never was headed. Sonny, the A. C. Bostwick starter, closed with courage on the inner rail, and Thomas Lynn always raced for-wardly. to be third. But the best race of all was run by Scorcher. After being just about left at the post, the Swenke plater closed an immense gap, and it appeared that he surely would have been the winner with equal luck at the start. FANTASTICS ICTOKY A SURIHISE. Two-vcar-old fillies to race four and a half furlongs was the third offering and it resulted in something of a surprise when Richard T. Wilsons Fantastic was winner from the Wheatley Stables Sturdy Stella and J. P. McGoverns Yictrix just beat the Cireentree Stables Lady Be Good for third. The start was a good one and l.ady Be Good was the one to cut out the running. Arnold had her on the inner rail and she was going exceedingly well until well inside the elbow of the course. Yictrix. further out In the c uirse. was in second place and Sturdy Stella was showing the way to the others. Fantastic had left from one of the outside jKJsitions and was outrun through the early Stages. Yictrix was keeping l.ady Be Cood exceedingly busy an eighth from home, but at the same time Sturdy Stella was charging outside of the pair of them with the result that she had both beaten at the sixteenth post. There she went over slightly and Yictrix met with some slight interference. In the meantime Maiben had worked his way up with Fantastic and it was in that last sixteenth she made her winning rush that saw her two lengths clear at the end. Bather a smart band came together in the mile «,l" the second race, and Montferrat, und r a clever ride by Clarence Turner, carried the Sagamore Stahles silks to victory. II. Howes Sepoy took second place, and George D. Wideners Hardwood closed a considerable gap to be third from W. H. Coes Zuker. The start was a good one. except that Crossfire, a starter from the Bog Cabin Stud Stahle. jumped in the air and, before Maiben had him settled, he was hopelessly out of the contention. %uker showed the most early speed, and he went into command, with Sepoy and Nomad not far away. Hardwood had the inside post position and. When he failed to come clear, he was crowded back slightly and had little running chance. Montferrat was in the front division, and he soon went to Zuker and took command. while Sepoy followed him. This was the order in the stretch, where Barnes ran Hardwood into more trouble when he attempted to come through on the inside. In the meantime. Bou Chaib, the C. H. Fleisehmann starter, had circled around, but he lost ground by going wide, and he was tiring at the end. Montferrat was tiring badly in the final sixteenth, but Turner cleverly kept him going, to be winner by a narrow margin, while Sepoy beat Hardwood by a length and a half, and the Widener three-year-okl headed out the tired Zuker. Fourteen cheap ones raced in the mile of the sixth and. after Anaconda had made most of the pace, Maiben brought C. A. Hart wells l.iholiho along with a winning rush that saw hirn going away at the end. Anaconda saved second place and Highwayman, after racing along in second place, lost third to Lingard from the Oak Bidge Stahle. Tea Ball wheeled at the barrier and was virtually left, having absolutely no racing chance. Both an accident and a disqualification came out of the six and a half furlongs of the fifth race. The accident was when Zero Hour stumbled and unseated G. Arnold. The disqualification came when owpuncher, alter finishing second to Eddie Hickenbacher. was held responsible f r the accident. Tins moved Miss Payette into second place and awarded third to Qeod Boy. At the end of tin card Northern Pass, Under B long and vigorous ride by George IV Ids beat a big band Of I wo- ye it •-old maidens for the Oak Ridge Stable. Tipstaff, from the Banco. -as Stable, raced to second place, while third was the portion of M. E. Johnstons Mirafel.
