PERCUSSION AND E. BENHAM « Prove Winning Duo in Sensational Performance at Latonia. » Win Castle Farm Purse In Fastest Mile and Seventy Yards Kaee of Present Spring Meeting. « LATONIA, Ky., June IS.— The fastest mile and seventy yards race of the meeting was run today when the Castle Farm Purse, the principal offering of Fridays program, was run and won by Percussion under a skillful ride on the part of jockey B. Benham. Percussion ran the dist:inee in 1:42%. four-fifths of a second slower than the track record. Traymore. the public choice, finished second and Winter Street was third. While Percussion raced with speed and gameness her success was due chiefly to the fearlessness of her rider, who sent her through a narrow opening on the inside less than a sixteenth of a mile from the finish. After she squeezed through the gap Hen ham rode her with all the energy and skill at his command with the happy result for her sup-portera that she was got up to beat Traymore by a neck in as thrilling a finish as has been witnessed here this year. One and one-half lengths behind the closely grouped leaders. Winter Street finished in third place. This fellow might have been , -loser up but for his dislike of being squeezed between Percussion and Traymore near the end, which caused him to shorten his stride quickly. He showed the way from the outset to within seventy yards of the finish, where Traymore dashed to the front. A few yards closer to the place of linish the ultimate winners nose showed in front and she .ioggediy kept it there to the close. The fractional time for the race was :J3, :47. 1:11% and 1 :::s, the full distance la the aforementioned figures. Colden Lynn suddenly returned to good form, to run the three-quarters of the open- Cotitiuuiil on twenty fourth u.-ige. PERCUSSION AND E. BENHAM Continued from first page ing race in 1 :12% and win easily from Selective, with Hose Mist third. The winner sprinted to the front after turning into the stretch and raced away from her company with every stride thereafter. Foreclosure captured the second race from Dark Angel, with Bourbon Girl third. She obtained the best of the start, but was unequal to the task of retaining the position. This resulted in her being shuffled back, as Vim Ginger and Stormswept. one which run away seven-eighths on the way to the post, showed the way. Midway on the upper turn Vim Ginger elected to race very wide, taking her closest attendants with her and making a wide opening on the inside through which Foreclosure raced to get to the front. As Foreclosure continued in the lead thuough the stretch.- Dark Angel, Bourbon Girl and Vim Ginger bumped, making it impossible for either to do their best until too late. Six better than ordinary two-year-olda were out for the Clovernook Purse at five-eighths, and E. B. McLeans fleet Port Star, an even money choice, made a runaway of it in the good time of 1 :00. The victor began fast and assumed a good lead after the first quarter, never to be molested thereafter. He won at the end by two lengths from Noreaster, which proved himself easily best of the others. Dr. Maxon and Forenoon provided a spirited skirmish for third place, the former getting up on the inside to take the last of the valuable placings by a short neck. Foregone, which ran coupled with Forenoon, met with sharp interference at the first turn. Xtra, showing improvement, won easily over the one and one sixteenth miles of the third race. She gained the lead three-sixteenths of a mile from the finish and added to her advantage with the progress of the-race thereafter. Hoyal Sweep raced to second place after being prominent all the way, and Seths Premium was good enough to beat the others to the finish.
