BARCOLOS FINE RACE ♦ Home First in Enquirer Handicap, Scoring in Fast Time. ♦ Beats Rhinock by a Head, With Helens Babe Third — Harold Stakes to Lovely Manners. ♦ PATONIA, Ky., June 19.— Todays Latonia racing, which included annual renewals of the Harold Stakes for two-year-old colts and geldings at five and one-half furlongs and the Enquirer Handicap, at one and one-sixteenth miles for three-year-olds and over, provided thrills galore and a good measure of wholesome sport for the almost capacity crowd that attended. The Harold Stakes brought victory for Ij. T. Coopers Lovely Manners, with Oeneral Haldeman second and Sport Trail third. Porridge was fourth. This event carried a net winning value of ,980 and was the richest of the two. Col. K. R. Bradleys three-year-old Barcolo, under a most skillful ride by the youthful L. Craver, was returned victorious in the Enquirer, the son of North Star III. and Uoreid, winning in the fast time of 1 :43% by a head from the Parkview Stables Rhinock. Another three-year-old, H. I. Headleys Quickstep Handicap winner, Helens Babe, was third and Superfrank winch went into the race with Princess Doreen as the Audley Farm Stable entry, was fourth, the Princess failing badly. BEAUTIFUL SILVER SET. The Enquirer netted Colonel Bradley ,600 and a beautiful silver set. the gift of Edward B. McPean. In the absence of Colonel Bradley, H. J. Thompson, chief trainer of the Idle Hour Farm Stables horses, accepted the latter award from judge-Charles F. Price, who made the presentation immediately after the finish. This race proved the fastest of the meeting] at the distance with the diminutive Helens Babe doing much to make for the speed with which the ground was negotiated. She was taken into the lead with the start and her ability to cover the first quarter in :2:P... I half mile in :46*f, ; three-quarters in 1 :12 and mile in 1:37.-, forced Barcolo and Rhinock I to do the remaining sixteenth of a mile with j good speed to dispose of her and stage their gruelling struggle for top award. The finish | was beautiful and the large crowd expressed pleasure with a round of thund -rous cheering as they passed the judges stand. The Harold Stakes was somewhat marred by Lovely .Manners, the winner, which bore over sharply to the inside seventy yards from the finish, impeding the course of Sport Trail and humping Oeneral Haldeman several times before .1. Heupel straightened out the Cooper colt. When Lovely Manners came over Johnny MeT;iggart had to pull Sport Trail up sharply at a time when he i was only a short distance- from the leader and he-ad and head with General Haldeman. MeTagirart lodged a claim of foul imme-j diately after nrhjhfng ot:t hut while- the stewards refused to alter the original finish, they suspended Heupel for ten days for rough riding near the finish. The McLean youngster held sway until Lovely Manners came up on the outside three-sixteenths otut and General Haldeman moved into the fight by coming through on the inside as a result of Sport Trails racing wide at the last turn. SEPARATED BY INCHES. The three horses raced inches apart for almost an eighth then Lovely Manners bore in to eliminate Sport Trail and beat General Haldeman to the finish by more than a length after bumping him seventy yards out. Iorridge was fourth at the end, with "hair-man. King Basil, Royal Julian, Comrade and Ortlieb following in the order mentioned. The latter was caught in the barrier and only galloped after the other ;is the mishap eliminated him. Fallowing an early morning shower, the skies cleared and the afternoon could not have been improved. A delightful biceje rippled across the course beneath a brilliant sun, making for much the finest weather of the current meeting. The sun and wind combined to lift the dampnt ss from the track and the racing strip was at its best when time for racing arrived. The attendance appeared much the largest of the season with exeep ion of Derby day. The veteran Broomster increased his string of victories by one when under Willie Pools energetic riding he scored a hard won" and ] well deserved triumph from 1anie, Massillon | and seven other fair sprinters in th - inaugural dash of three-quarters. The winner took • command in the stretch and gamely held I Ianie safe. Sandy Hatch, the favorite, dwelt , with the start and never figured in the real running. Sixty raced right out of the maiden division on the occasion of his first appearance I under colors when he gamely conuuered Try-I out in the last forty yards of the second race. This was a dash of five eighths and the winner covered the couise in 1 :00-"-r,. being well ridden by H. legere. Third place fell to Henry Horner. Lmgchamps scored in the third at one and one-eighth miles. Jockey L. Craver brought the victor through on the inside all the way, gathering a good lead going to the turn out of the back stretch and racing the remainder of the ground under a snug hold. Ihidias. he favorite and second to finish, was caught on the outside of Midwestern and Sea Drift when they bore out and the loss of ground reduced his chances. Piiil MeCann took third pace by I a nose from Lady Inez.
