FORT ERIES OPENING DAY • . Crowd of 12,000 Journey From Buffalo to Canadian Course. ♦ Joy Smoke, With Jockey Butwell in the Saddle, Accounts for the Statler Hotel Stakes. FOTtT KRIR. Ont .. June 19. DefOCS a crowd of twelve thousand racing fans, Joy Smoke, owned l y Kdward F. Whitney and ridden by J. Butwell, gave further prfcof of his quality, when he accounted for the Statler Hotel Stakes that featured the opening days card at the border course. Joy Smoke carried top impost and. by winning this event, added ,700 to the New York sportsmans coffers. From a good start. Token, beginning from number one position, was sent into the lead going to the first turn, and Peternel took a snug hold of his mount Joy Smoke was raced up alongside by Butwell, and they raced as a team for the greater part of the journey, with Token having the position next the rail, llerkert was racing in third position, close enough to the leaders to make a serious move at any time. Peternel made his first challenge rounding the turn into the stretch, but Butwell was ever alert and moved simultaneously. Heading fnto the stretch, Token held a slight advantage, but Joy Smoke had begun his charge and passed Token a sixteenth out and was winner l y a half length, while Token saved second place by a length and a half from Golden Billows, which closed with splendid speed and was five lengths in front of her stablemate, Aucilla. GOLDEN RULE TO THE FORE. The Genesee Purse, secondary feature, fell to Golden Rule, from the Ross stable, in a hard drive from Gold Rock, with Digit third and the others well grouped as the end was reached. Gold Rock went into command shortly after the start, with Digit forcing the pace and Golden Rule lying close at hand and racing strongly. Gold Rock continued to show the way well into the home stretch, but tired somewhat and gave way to the winner in the closing strides. Form followers failed badly in the opening race, when they installed Muskallonge the favorite, and he flattered early in the running by going along with the pace cut out by Ace of Aces II.. only to tire when the real battle came. The winner turned up in Rest Shot, ridden by the diminutive E. Sut-phin. Best Shot raced well up in the early running and, when sent down for the final struggle, went to the front with good speed and. shaking off Ac- of Aces II. at the eighth post, came on to win by three lengths, while Win* Knows Me also finished fast to get the place award. Ace of Aces II., after showing the way most of the distance, quit to a walk and just lasted to get the minor end of the purse. Forecast II. scored her second trimuph in as many starts, when she took down the major portion of the purse in the second race of the day, which was fashioned for homc-breds in a drive from Hillardo from the Rcss Stable. Forecast II. raced for-wardly from the start and. when called on for the final struggle, wore the tiring Hillardo down in the stretch run and was going away the last few yards. Her margin over the Ross color bearer was a length. tAltlt VIEW ALL THE WAT. Walter Fenwicks Clear View gave a good account of himself in the mile and one-eighth offering of the third race on the days program, when he made the running throughout. Capably ridden by H. Thomas, he i assed the finish a length and a half in the van of Compromise. The tetter was a keen factor for the entire race and made the winner hustle the last part of it to maintain his lead. Black Wand came with a belated burst of speed after suffering early interference, and the manner in which she charged on the leaders through the stretch gave evidence that she would have been a prominent contender but for this misfortune. Gunsight and Larnpus. two that received a heavy play, raced well in the tally stages, but they proved dismal failures when the real test came. Another surprise came with the running of the fourth race, a two-year-old dash, which brought out seven starters to try for honors. Tin- winner came from unexpected quarters, when Tamiami Trail drove home a winner hv a half length from Bk ointip and N;ilt nta, while Handclasp, installed the choice. finished in fourth place, beaten by a neck by Nalenta. Tamiami Trail was forced to come from fifth position to gain the laurels, while Bloomtip made the pace from the rise of the barrier, only to succumb to the winic-rs bid in the last sixteenth. Handclasp ruined whatever chance he had when he came very wide into the stretch, ami Peternel had his hands full endeavoring to keep him straight.
