Dick Welles Selections At fairmount Park HIDDEN JEWEI — MMKOli— SHASTA BOX. The opening attraction is over the three-quarters distance, for which eighteen are entered. None of tlie intended starters has any claims to clai»s. and the race is more or less an oi en one. Our selection is HIDDEN JEWEL, from the stahle of 1*. Heffernan. In his younger days, this racer would have been able to beat this bunch on three legs, but not at the present. However, he stacks up as the most likely winner, taking a line through his most recent race. XIMROD will very likely go to the post the favorite. His last race was fair, but he will have to do much better today Id get the winners portion of the purse. For the show. SHASTA BOX seems as good as another. He ran to the show in his last out and should be able to repeat that effort if any good at all. COYNE— DR. T. S. DABNEY— ISLAND KAIKY. The second numlier, over the mile and a sixteenth route, is apt to prove a battle between COVXE and DR. T. S. DAHNEY. They have both won their last outs, but the race put up by the former was by far the most impressive, both from a time standpoint and ease of winning. His margin of victory was two lengths, while the DOCTOR had to put up one of his best efforts to gain the decision by a neck. Weight is a great leveler and, as both pack ten pounds more today than they did in their last starts, it is bound to make for an even race. ISLAND FAIRY gets the call for the show. Her last race is to be thrown out, as she can do better than that effort indicated. PREVAIL— FRANK ANDREWS— FOBETOP. We like the chances of PREVAIL in the Wabash Purse over the five-eighths distance for maiden two-year-olds. He has been close up in all of his recent races and is about ready to graduate. Given a good ride, and with equal racing luck, he should triumph. FRANK ANDREWS ran one good race here in his out before last. In that race he finished second to l aurel Hall, and he needs but to run as well today to get the place again. FORETOP should race to the show, if his laat two races were a true indication of his present form. BEDWELL is sweet on this trick and expects him to win many a race for him. EDWARD GRAY— LATHROP— DENIZEN. The best play on the card is entered in the fourth. This one is EDWARD CRAY. He was entered Saturday and, win or lose, he is our selection here. He has been racing in good form and only needs to run one of his good races to be home the easiest winner of the day. At the shorter distance of a mile. LATHROP should stand a good chance of getting the place money. Of late, he has been competing in distance events, and i they are not to his liking. He possesses plenty of early speed, and this looks like a good spot for him. If DENIZEN were to race as he did at the Fair Grounds last winter, he wouldnt have much difficulty in getting the short end of the purse. CHIEF INC AS— CHILDS PLAY— FAST TIME. The fifth is named the Tri-City Purse, and some good performers are to be seen in action. CHIEF UNCAS, owned by A. Busch. Jr., and which was figured to have a chance in the Kentucky Derby of last year, is among those entered and, if he is ever going to graduate, it should be here. His last three races have been good ones, for be placed in each one of them. The distance is all to his liking, and he should swre without much trouble. CHILDS PLAY figures to be the runner-up in the race. She lias been threatening to win of late and has only to run one of her regular races to get the place. If FAST TIME would race back to her last out, she would be the one to account for the show money. SHASTA GRAFTON— TOMMY FOSTER —BE APT I STAR. Of the juveniles which are to compete in the sixth event, another five-eighths dash, SHASTA GRAFTON, which races for the Brown Shasta Stock Farm, seems the most logical play. She is still a maiden, but a good one and likely to graduate here without much trouble. Her middle name has been consistency in all of her races and, with this easier company to race against, think she will prove best. TOMMY FOSTER carries the colors of the International Stable, and in his only race here to date, did not fare so well. We are throwing that performance out of the calculations and expect to see him much closer up today. BEAUTY STAR should capture the show money, if she races as she did in her last out REAP— BILLY STAR— MAD BOY. The McCuan racer, REAP, is gradually getting into winning form and we think this will prove a profitable spot for him. The distance is all to his liking and if he gets away in motion, look for him to score. BILLY STAR has slipped plenty of late and is nowheres near the racer he used to be. However, he could get the place if he would race back to his last out, when he finished second to Al Stebler. That was over a slow course and we think he will do better today on the firm strip. MAD BOY, is good at the present and needs but to repeat his last race to knock down the show money. One Best Bet — EDWARD GRAY, in the Fourth Race.
