THREE-YEAR-OLD STAKES ♦ New Money Winning Record May be Made This Year. . ♦ Kon- onflirting Schrdole Makes It Possible to Start Same Horses in Six of the Richest Races. ♦ LOUISVILLE, K , April 15.— The cham-i plon three-year-old of 1927 will be in a fair way to set a new mark for money winning horses of that age. Through the efforts of Matt J. Winn, who guides the destinies of a number of major tracks, a non-conflicting schedule of valuable stakes for horses of that age division has been arranged. Winn, who is vice-president of t.ie Kentucky Jockey Club, managing director of the Fairmount Jockey Club in Illinois near St. Louis, and executive director of the Lincoln Fields Jockey Club near Chicago, recognized early in the year the importance of avoiding conflicts in the big spring stakes, not only on his own tracks, but at Churchill Downs, where the Kentucky Derby will be run on Saturday, M:iy 14; Iatonia, Fairmount Park and Lincoln Fields, but with the Preakness at Pim-lico on May 9 or the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park on June 11. DATES OF RENEWALS. With these considerations in mind, Winn and his associates worked out a western program with the 0,000 added Kentucky Darby on May 14, the 5,000 Fairmount Derby on June 4, the American Derby at Washington Park on June 18, the 5,000 added Latonia Derby on June 26, and the 5,000 Lincoln Handicap at Lincoln Fields on July 9. In this way a super three-year-old might win three or more of these biggest races on the American turf. The Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont are all 0,000 events. It will be noted that this arrangement places the I atonia Derby late in the season. The I.atonia event is at one mile and a half, which requires a strenuous preparation. With j most of the big stakes at shorter distances preceding it, candidates for the Iatonia Derby will be able to race into prime condition for the more gruelling struggle. . Interest in the Kentucky Derby this spring Is the greatest in his turf experience, according to Winn. He states that not only are all of the 2.000 boxes reserved for Derby Day, but that there are more than 600 on the waiting list, waiting for cancellations, which rarely happen except as a result of death or accident. DERBY HORSES OF HIGH QUALITY. •Winn is enthusiastic over the class of horses entered in the Derby. In this respect the nominations excel those of recent years. He points out that almost all of the great two-year-olds of last year are named in the Derby and all are training well for the big event. From recent trials it is evident that these stars have retained their form of last year. The open winter in Kentucky and the east and winter racing in the south has made it possible to give Derby candidates unusually i early preparation. The Derby horses at Churchill Downs, Douglas Park and Lexington are far advanced in their conditioning. In preparation for a record crowd on Derby Day, Winn is spending 5,000 for the comfort of visitors and to add to the beauty of the course. He has obviated the possibility of congestion and made a number of improvements that will add to the convenience Of Derby day guests. The greenhouse at Churchill Downs already is abloom and when the big plant is garbed in its finest for the Derby it will be one of the loveliest racing spots in America. .A. .
