MAX HIRSCHS DERBY HAND ♦ Training Three Eligibles for Three Different Owners. ♦ Has Charge of The Satrap, Rip Rap and Terry — Formidable Trio Won Nine Out of Eleven Starts Last Year. ♦ LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 15.— Max Hirsch, trainer of Sarazen and other noted thoroughbreds, possesses at least one distinction among those preparing candidates for the fifty-third Kentucky Derby. Hirsch is training Derby eligibles for three different owners. Whether all three will face the barrier at Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 14, of course, cannot be told at this time, but with Hirschs past achievements as a conditioner of thoroughbreds in mind it may be safely stated that any horse he starts will be amply fitted for the 0,000 added event Hirsch has in his charge The Satrap, Rip Rap and Terry. The Satrap is the 00,000 colt imported from England by William Du-pont. He was acclaimed the best of his age on the other side last year. He won four stakes under heavy imposts and in his only defeat carried 134 pounds to 116 borne by the winner. Rip Rap, a chestnut colt, by Broomstick, in the Sage Stable, won three of his four starts last year, among them being the Walden Handicap. Terry belongs to Sam H. Harris. He is a North Star III. colt. He started only twice last year and won both times. Thus it may be seen that Hirschs hand is a strong one. He seems to have fine material for the development of another Sarazen. His three Derby candidates started, all told, a total of eleven times as two-year-olds and won nine races. There apparently is considerable confidence in the East in the ability of Rip Rap. In those tables of relativity called winter book odds Rip Raps rating has grown shorter until now he is placed near the first flight of candidates. ROLLED STOCKINGS STATUS Reports from Lexington are most enthusiastic regarding Rolled Stocking. He is said to be one of the finest Derby prospects trained over the Kentucky Association course in years, which is saying considerable. Rolled Stocking as a two-year-old was close to the top of the heap in the West. The way he finished all of his races indicated that he would be at his best over a long route of ground. He wintered well and his early gallops have stamped him as a top-notch thoroughbred. It is not unlikely that he may go to the post the most highly regarded of the ; western-Cwned racers. Nominations for the Grainer Memorial Handicap, the Latonia Derby and the Inaugural Handicap at Latonia. have been announced by Colonel Matt J. Winn, general manager of the Kentucky Jockey Club.. The Grainer Memorial, which will be run at Churchill Downs, is at a mile and a juarter, for three-year-olds and over, with 0,000 added. It attracted eighty-five nominations.
