Irvine Irvine g Q , _4 „-* While it will inevitably be shown that some of the candidates were a bit lacking in condition, this renewal promises to bring out more good horses that are closer summer form than any other Harford that has been run before. It will be a race from the time James Milton sends them away, to the finish. The problem that has developed seems one of available riding material rather than thoroughbred fitness. Trainers are loathe to send their horses out under inexperienced youngsters, and there are less than two dozen experienced riders available at the weights Mr. McLennan has assigned. The quality of the opening day program is not confined to the Harford Handicap by any means. There are six other races which lift the program above any that general manager Kurke and his associates have ever been able to produce. The juvenile race, which opens proceedings. :ias an even dozen youngsters, half of which are said to he better than the best that were shown in action at Howie. The Tip Top Purse, a five and a half furlongs dash, has Harry Payne Whitneys Whiskery, the Island Kami Stables Indian Love Call, the well-liked Kore Lark, the H. Teller Archibald pair, Candy Hog and tandy Pig, and some others. It will not surprise the dockers if this event is run in close to record time, since track superintendent James Iloss famous Irish chicken screen harrow has done its work in fine style during the last few days and the oval is at its In-st. SUPILKMKNTAKY IKATIRE. The Chester Purse at a mile and seventy yards, is another attraction of the sparkling program and it summons Marry Payne Whitneys lleminder, the H. G. Bedwell pair. I tan ton and Cudgeller. and the whimsical King Solomons Seal, which the A. C. Bostwick trainer has l een grooming steadily at Kenning for the last six weeks. There should be no let down in enthusiasm from the oi ener to the final, a claiming race which has eleven well matcluo, though somewhat below the average platers. A banner attendance is expected. Special race trains will l e run from Washington and l» uiiliiiuetl ou tcutb l Jiie. HAVRE DE GRACE OPENING Continued from first page Baltimore on the South and from points as far North as New York. The state roads commission threatens to surprise J.he average American race-going: motorist by having every artery in its department in tiptop condition for work in the vicinity about completed. With the arrival of Harry Payne Whitneys Croyden on Thursday night, the Harford promises to become even brighter. The big bay went into trainer Hopkins barn and James Howe. Jr., who has assisted in his preparation at BrookdaJe, will be here tomorrow to witness his performs n«. Others of the Whitney string will be brought here next week. Silver Fox stood his trip from Jobs town. N. J., like a Trojan, according- to trainer Frank Hackctt. The big dapple gray is fit. or he would not have been sent here. He galloped three-eighths in :36% under hard restraint. Uncle Sam Hildreth never sends short horses on important errands, the records show. The three-year-olds, five of them that have been nominated for the Chesapeake, will be here next week if present plans carry. It is said that Swecpster is the green and whites most likely Derby and Chesapeake candidate. When trainer Harry Rites sent K. J. Griffiths Canter over the mile route during the morning, the dockers decided that the Virginia veteran had determined to confide his Harford hopes in Single Foot- Canter is very close to a mighty keen edge. Before he had gone half the distance of his final trial in 1 :429s Rites was about in mid-track wildly waiving the exercise boy to slow down. Canter looks the part He will be one of the fittest that will answer the Philadelphia Handicap summons next week. Among the sidelights of the morning training hour was the three-quarters in 1 :18 which The Satrap accomplished. The English gray was none too impressive. He was wobbly at the finish after the first five-eighths in 1 :01 had been covered with the Sage Stables Dodo as his companion. William DuPont, Jr., his owner, and trainer Hirsch minutely inspected his gait when he was brought back. The Satrap came here an acknowledged unsound colt. His ailment is on the inner left leg. just about the ankle. Another reason why Canter and all the other distance handicap contenders hereabouts will have to be right at their best was proved when Crusader, with Karl Hor-vath in the saddle went the mile in 1 :42 and finished the mile and an eighth in 1 :55 under a stout pull all the way. "Just laughing," as the railbirds expressed it Among the veterans returning to Havre de Grace after several years of absence, is jockey Eddie Taplin, who came from Tijuana with the William Carroll division of the Willis Sharpe Kilmer band. Taplin, in his middle forties, is still the same energetic and capable pilot of juveniles that he always was, according to the pilgrims returning from the West Apprentice J. C. Mergler was thrown from one of the Wm. Garth two-year-olds during the meeting, when both stirrup cup straps broke. He suffered a wrenched ankle and a bruised knee. Paul Fox has taken over the engagement book of jockey Karl Horvath of the Glen Riddle Stable. Horvath led the riding list at Havana. Starter Milton and his assistants will start the meeting with a bulky schooling list, a heritage of the recent term at Bowie. Scorcher, Macbeth, Trajanus, Forecaster, Canister, Battle Shot, Applecross, Night March, Care Free, Chef-dOeuvre, Jacques, Steinway, Philosophy and African Dais are the faulty ones.
