SPRIGS ANCESTRAL LINES This Tears Grand National Winner Descendant of Worlds Famous Thoroughbred Family. SPECIAL. CORRESPONDENCE I/3NDON, England. Sprig, winner of this years OJrand National, is a thoroughbred on both sides of his pedigree. He is the first foal of his dam, and is a chestnut gelding, bred in 1917. He is a son of Marco, a brilliant race horse. He sired Mareovil. This line has become world famous, through the latters unbeaten son Hurry On, as well as Captain Cuttle and Coronach. The late John Musker and the Melton stud again played parts in the breeding of the latest National winner. Jack Horner, which was successful last year, was bred by Musker. Spry, the dam of Sprig, is a daughter of Galloping Simon, which was bred by Mr. Musker. He never raced and at the Musker dispersal sale in 1917, Galloping Simon was sold for 25. R. C. B. Partridge bred Spry and owned her produce until 1919, when the mare was transfetred to his mother. Spry as a two-year-old ran once unplaced. She was only five years old when she bred Sprig, her first foal. She has been a regular breeder, but none of her other produce has achieved great fame, though Prince Sadim was a useful winner on the flat, and Prince Jerome won five races over hurdles. Spry this year has a beautiful colt by Black Gauntlet, and is now in foal to Somme Kiss. Tom Hall, who has been with Mrs. Partridge as stud groom for forty years, came to Aintrte to see Sprig win. Old Tom is even older than his mistress, who is in her seventy fifth year. Red Eagle the sire of Spread Eagle was successful in five or six races, but he was of very moderate class. He did nothing at the stud and was used as a country stallion, traveling the road.s and being bred to farmers mares at per mare. Thoroughbred mares were accepted free to Red Eagle. Presumably it cost nothing to breed the grand-dam of Sprig. lied Eagle is by Thurio, a fine stayer. To those of our American friends, who find delight in analysing the blood lines that produce a horse capable of winning such a race as the Grand National, the following pedigree of Sprig should prove interesting : m . i West Australian 3 s",on J Darlings Dam ■ S J Bel lad rum ■ iBallyroe | Bon Accord ■ S - Newminnter p 3 Hermit J Seclusion i lv - *U« jar- * § ,*" I i Master Kildare r „ ■ lUltoa Violet Mtlrose P f * •a e. o St. Simon lR,nM,,« riyg Footstep r- o M ■ i • I M , Thurio I- K**1 «■*»* iRreOame ■ £ Paul Jones e. „ SpreadinK Rail j H,„.k rotu,n
