WOODBINE PARK STAKES Monday, May 2, Is Closing Date for Nominations to Five Important Fixtures. TORONTO. Ont . April 26.— Monday. May 1. is the closing date for five of the Ontario Jockey Clubs leading stakes, namely the Toronto Cup Handicap, recently increased in value frcm 0,000 to 5,000; the King Edward Gold Cup. of .000 ; William Hendrie Memorial Handicap. ,000 added : WoodsticK Plate. ,000 added ; and the Victoria Stakes. ,000 added. A big entry list is anticipated for each of these events, especially the Toronto Cup Handicap, which has- never failed to attract nominations from many of the leading American racing establishments, as well aa the cream of Canadian stables. With the increased value this year the field for the event should be a most imposing one. In point of monetary value, the Toronto Cup is now equal to the Kings Plate and second only to the latter in point of historic interest. The William Hendrie Memorial Handicap is another popular feature with American sportsmen and is one of the best reasons why many of the countrys leading steeplechasers are found at Woodbine Park year after year. Steeplechasing has always been popular at Woodbine and the healthy response to the other two big jumping features of the spring meeting — the Woodbine and Aintree Steeplechases, which closed on March 15 — guarantees a like success for the Hendrie. There is not a stake on the Ontario Jockey Clubs program of less than ,000 added value and each days card will include overnight purses of ,500, ,000 or ,500 value. In fact, there is not a race of any description that will carry a purse of less than ,200. «
