COLUMBUS SPORT EXCITING • Showers Fail To Keep Racegoers From Attending Beulah Park. » . . Naughty Nisba Scores Under K. Noes Good Ride— Allen Bros. Bride o the Wind in Easily Achieved Victory. ♦ COLUMBUS, Ohio. May 3.— Dull skies, with intermitten rain which threatened to turn into a real downpour, greeted racegoers at Beulah Park today. Nevertheless another large off-day crowd was on hand to witness the program while the closeness of the finishes satisfied the most exacting among those present. Slipping through on the inside when Geo. Kuffan carried the others wide, Escape took command in the third race, a dash of three-quarters, and though Nero loomed up dangerously in the run down the back stretch, Escape still had plenty in reserve with which to again draw clear when Hay gave him his head, winning under restraint by a length and a half margin from Jof, which came from far back in the stretch, displacing Nero by a head, while the public choice, Young April, was fourth. Bride O Th Wind, which races in the silks of Allen Bros, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and ridden by jockey N. Chilcut. scored the easiest victory of the day in the fifth race of a featureless card. Arabella from C. D. Thompsons stable was second with Brownie Smile third, and Turn-berry fourth. The field was delayed at the start by the fractious actions of Chief Uncas, but when the barrier was released all left in perfect alignment. Arabella rushed into the lead closely pressed by Bride O Th Wind with the others well back. Reaching the back stretch Chilcut shot Lie Allen filly up to take command from the pacemaker and from then on it was only a question of how much her winning margin would be. Arabella held on gamely to take second place by a length from Brownie Smile. Jockey L. Hardy and Banker Brown from the S. C. Foster band proved a winning combination in the second, but only after withstanding the hardest of stretch drives to defeat Red Seth a head at the end. Lizzie N. saved the show money for her owners. Hardy, ever alert at the barrier, secured a clear lead with his mount and increased it to a three-length margin over Fort Bliss, which in turn led Red Seth. As the field approached the far turn Banker Brown looked all over the easiest of winners, when he suddenly shortened his stride, forcing Hardy to resort to the bat to stall off the fast finishing rush of Red Seth. which at every stride was rapidly ovet hauling the Foster Gelding, but Hardy, by his superior riding ability, man- Kontinucd on twentieth page. COLUMBUS SPORT EXCITING Continued from first page aged to keep him going to earn a short head victory. Cheating Cheaters, well fancied by many, showed that he possessed all that his admirers claimed fur him by the way in which he won the opening race over the five-eighths route, leading home Solomons Kilts by a length margin, though used up at the end. Dr. Sisk beat Colden Armour by a half length for the .smaller portion of the purse. Kugene Lutz saddled Naughty Nisba. winner of the fourth rare. The winner wa.s ridden by K. Xoe. who showed much of his old time vigor by the brilliant manner in which he rode the aged daughter nt" The Manager — Daisy Ilatt. Beginning from the barrier in a good position Rh was content to rate his mount along till safely round -the first turn where he called upon her and piiikly overhauling the pacemaker Barberry, she took the lead and the result was never in doubt. The real race wa.s for second place with .launebar, Barbrry and Batsman all driving to the utmost and reaching the finish line so closely aligned that a blanket would have covered the trio.
