GREENTREE SILKS ONE-TWO • Cherry Pie and Navigator First and Second in Feature. ♦ Itanroras Stables Sliver Fox Among the Inplareil — Hopedale Handicap to Veteran Cartoonist. ♦ mr YORK. N. Y.. May 3 — The Green tree Stables silks finished first an l second in the Kong Beach Handicap. th«- feature of the card at Jamaica today, and it was that sturdy old veteran. Cherry Pie. that was in front at the finish. Navigator was just a nose behind him, while Sepoy, racing in the colors of I,. H. Howe, was third, and just a length ahead of William Zieglers Gamble. Silver Kox was kept back of the leaders to the far turn and when he made his move it was too late. He tired in the stretch and Fa tor eased him up for the remainder of the distance. It was Navigator that set the pace until! the final strides and he had plenty of speed at all times. It was his first task to race Son of John into defeat. Navigator was under restraint in the final sixteenth but it was right at the finsh that Kllis shot Cherry Pie to the front. Sepoy made up ground but raced wide as he turned into the stretch and lost much of the distance he had gained by his early-speed but he was running well at all times. Gamble did not get going easily, but he caught up with the others in the stretch and was going fast at the end. High Star was never in the race after the half mile post was passed. It was a bright afternoon and every train that went to Jamaica was filled comfortably. There was almost as much interest manifested in the Hopedale Handicap as there was in the Long Beach. BIMD GIRL EASILY. Iaverne Pa tor got Gnome Girl away speedily in the opener, with Stuarts Draft in close pursuit, but later was unable to keep up with the pace and fell back. The Holland mare was never extended and won with plenty of speed in reserve, six lengths ahead of the others. Kdith D. was among the i rear guard for the first half mile, but she improved her position steadily and at the finish was closest to the leader. Stuarts Draft used up his strength battling with Gnome Girl in the early part of the race and he was tiring a!l through the home stretch. Sweepster won a purse for Rancocas Stable in the second race and completed a double for Laverne Fator. The three-year-old was under slight pressure from his rider to the end. Ramoneur raced in second position all the way and made a determined effort to get up at the last turn for home, out was unable to gain much ground. Sun Forward finished third, but was never close to the pair in front. Bonnie Khayyams performance was decidedly disappointing. The Hopedale Handicap, secondary feature of the afternoons card, was won by Bud Fishers old gelding Cartoonist, which was whipped across the line by Pony McAtee in the final stride to down Roi Des Montagnes by a nose, while Happy Argo was three lengths back, outstaying Copiapo by a head for the third share of the purse. James Butlers Mote set the pace for the first quarter and then tired and dropped back. FASTEST TIMK OF MFKTING. Cartoonist was close to the leaders all the way and in the final strides showed a fine burst of speed and made the fastest time of the meeting for three-quarters. McAtee rode the Fish-T veteran perfectly and got everything he had to give, but it was not necessary to punish him in order to accomplish the victory. Happy Argo got away slowly, but worked his way up steadily and slipped through on the inside, rounding the far turn, arid it wa.« not certain that he was going to outlast Copiapo. which was tiring in the final sixteenth. The others showed nothing. The Greentree Stable completed a double for the afternoon with the victory of Rosi-nante. when he scored over a good band of juveniles in the fifth race. Kllis got the brown son of Leonardo II. off in front and kept him then- all the way to win with a couple of lengths from James Butlers High Flier, which looks like one of the best youngsters that Kast View Farm sent to the races this season. Sun Hire might have been better than third, but he got away slowly and lost ground in the back stretch, but Fronk got him closer to the rail in the run for home and he was cuming fast and gaining with every stride at the end. Wonderful suffered from more than his share of bumping entering the home strc-trh and wa.s in .lose quarters at the far turn. Sambeau bore out badly at the final turn and carried Star o" Morn out considerably. The sixth nice was marred by a couple of spills. Zonite stumbled at the start and unseated "Happy" Buxton. The horse followed the others and. passing the judges stand, bumped Alita Allen, causing the filly to stumble and Jackie Marr was tossed to the « round and lay there until picked up and carried to the jockey room. Marrs left c-ollarbon.- and right wrist were fractured. He w is given emergency treatment by Dr. J. lev tram Dowd. who said that the injuries Were not serious, but would keep Marr out of the saddle for many weeks. Buxton was nt hurt.
