MR. KIRKWOODS WORKOUT Milan Derby Candidate Gallops Mile and a Quarter in 2:05% at Lexington Track. LEXINGTON, Ky.. May 3 — Shortly before the running of the first race Monday J. C. Milam sent his Kentucky Derby candidate Mr. Kirkwood to the track for a workout over the full Derby route of one mile and a quarter. He responded with the fastest gallop at this distance of the year, the colt being timed in 2 :05%. He exhibited fine speed in the early stages of the workout and finished the distance handily under restraint by Wm. Garner. Be-; ginning at the quarter post he ran the first quarter in :24 ; half mile in :48 ; five-eights in 1:00; three-quarters in 1:12%; mile in 1 :39%, and mile an an eighth in 1 :51%. After dismounting Garner said that he had a good hold on the colt throughout and had instructions to keep him under steady restraint, particularly in the last quarter of a mile. The gallop was highly encouring for owner-trainer Milam, who announced that present plans call for Mr. Kirkwoods 1927 racing debut in a mile race at Churchill Downs next Monday and barring a mishap in I that race or while training he will be sent I after Derby honors. — ♦ ■
