MARSHALL FIELDS NflHBA VICTORIOUS Chicagoans War Cloud Filly Captures Coaching Club American Oaks Harry Payne Whitneys Frilette Second and the Belair BelairStuds Studs Flambino Third Net Value to toWinner Winner 15775 NEW YORK N Y June 8 Marshall Fields Nimba the bay daughter of War Cloud and Martha Snow was an easy winner of the Coaching Club American Oaks the big feature of the Belmont Park program today It was the first victory for the Field colors in this race and netted the stable 15775 and a cup valued at 200 200Three Three lengths back of Nimba was Harry Payne Whitneys Frilette with Flam ¬ bino a distant third Flambino and Bonnie Maginn were leased to P A Clark by William Woodward owner of the Belair Stud Stable and they carried the Clark silks A reason for the lease was the fact that Mr Clark has two legs on the Sineleton CUD which has to be won three times before it becomes the property of any sportsman sportsmanThe The two Clark victories were when Polkadot won in 1919 and when Flam bette the daughter of Flambino scored in 1921 1921The The big filly race is over the trying mile and threeeighths distance and it was an attraction that brought out a big crowd The weather was ideal and the track at its best bestSeven Seven went to the post in the big filly prize the only one to be withdrawn being Pandera and that still left Frilette and Termagant to bear the Whitney colors The others were Bonnie Maginn and Flambino racing for Mr Clark Aromagne the Willis Sharpe Kilmer hope and Gifford A Coch rans Circlet CircletNimba Nimba forced the pace all the way Through wayThrough the early racing Circlet went along alongwith with her and Termagant was under re reI I FlamI straint back of the pair of them Flam I bino and Bonnie Maginn were not far back backand and Aromagne was well before Frilette Frilettewhich which was racing back of the others othersThe The early pace was slow but on the turn out of the back stretch it became faster and as it did so Nimba had no trouble drawing away from Circlet while Termagant began to drop back Aromagne loomed up for an instant and Flambino made a threaten ¬ ing move but Nimba had no trouble stalling them off and holding her lead leadSwinging Swinging into the stretch Thurber per ¬ mitted the filly to race along and she was soon four lengths clear of the others and under restraint In the meantime Frilette went to the outside and she was gaining with a mighty rush Flambino was in sec ¬ ond place turning for home but Frilette bore down on her an eighth out and raced on by herself with little effort but she was still a good fillyFlambino three lengths back of Mr Fields filly Flambino was half a dozen lengths be ¬ fore Aromagne while Termagant Bonnie Maginn and Circlet were so far out of the running that they were being eased up at the end endDuring During the delay at the post Termagant bucked Fator from the saddle and it may have done her no good while it certainly did not help her rider riderThe The uneven pace is shown by the follow ¬ ing fractions The first quarter was run in 24 seconds half in 49 three quarters in 1 14 mile in 1 40 and mile and a quar ¬ ter in 207 and the mile and threeeighths in 219 219Twoyearold Twoyearold fillies of the plater variety met in the opening four and a half furlongs dash over the Widener course and James W Beans Turkeys Neck proved best when Continued on nineteenth page NIMBA OAKS WINNER Continued from first pace she led home J N Levins Clairdine with J P Jones Boyish Bob a distant third and Tinlta and Bonniebelle following in close order orderBonniebelle Bonniebelle had no barrier excuse on this occasion for she was off running and through the early stages she was showing the way to Turkeys Neck with Niki and Clairdine following closely Violet B had jumped in the air at the rise of the barrier and had scant chance chanceIt It was in the last eighth that Bonniebelle weakened badly and there Turkeys Neck drew out but at the end she was forced to do her best to beat Clairdine a neck The pair of them were four lengths in front of Boyish Bob and then came the next three closely lapped lappedF F Tfcorndyke recently graduated brought the Greentree Stables old mare Conniebert home the winner of the selling steeplechase over the Norwood Stables Pagebrook which was ridden by J V H Davis a gentle ¬ man rider who was making his first appear ¬ ance in an open steeplechase Four lengths back of these came NeapTide from the Winburn Stable and she was a head in front of Mrs V Carltons Perkiomen PerkiomenAll All of this might have been different had it not been that H Hunt went down with the Laurel Park Stud Stables Ballast II two fences from the finish And Hunt was almost solely to blame for the spill himself when he went to the fence lapped on Connie ¬ bert with the result that his mount rose when the mare did and naturally too soon to make the fence fenceConniebert Conniebert was rushed out from the drop of the flag and she forced the pace through ¬ out with Smart Sinner racing after her in the early stages but he went down at the sixth fence and then it was NeapTide which moved Into second place but Ballast II was galloping along strongly back of the pace and he had been under stiff restraint through ¬ out the early racing racingIn In the backfield Hunt permitted him to step along and he was rapidly wearing down Conniebert and almost had her when he foolishly went to the fence lapped on the mare with the tumble as a result With Ballast II out of the way it left Conniebert out alone but Pagebrook had been steadily Improving his post position and he finished frith excellent courage to be beaten only two lengths while he was twice that dis ¬ tance in front of NeapTide Perkiomen was right there and the others were badly strung out with Dinna Ken last lastIn In this race C Pinon who rode Smart Sinner was making his debut as a cross ¬ country rider He had ridden Bedford Las ¬ sie in the first race Fortunately he was not hurt and he walked from the field fieldSon Son of John was rushed into an early lead by George Fields and for the first quarter Amberjack chased him with Cloudland not far away and Brown Bud and Premier in the rear The last named was particularly slow to be under way and early in the race he was being roused with the whip Amber Jack soon tired and as he dropped back Cloudland moved into second place while at the same time Brown Bud began to move up resolutely resolutelyAt At the end of the stretch it was evident that Cloudland would pass Son of John and an eighth out be was clear and under re ¬ straint Both Brown Bud and Premier fin ¬ ished fast under punishment and Brown Bud bothered Premier a bit but they were both well back of Cloudland at the end endThe The third was a mile race the Sisonby Handicap an overnight affair and Frank Browns Cloudland proved best when he led home Fred K Johnsons Brown Bud and Robert L Gerrys Premier after a long drive closed a big gap to easily outstay Jefferson Livingtons Son of John for third place The only other starter was Amberjack and after shownig a flash of early speed he dropped out of It to be easing up at the end ten lengths back of the others othersW W R Coes Indian Scout was fortunate at the start in the fiveeights mile Widener Course race that was the fifth and he had speed enough to lead throughout and beat the Greentree Stables Imperator with Harry Payne Whitneys Oh Say saving third place placeThe The closing race was a seveneights mile dash and it resulted In a truly sensational finish when Ruskin from the Carlton Stable after being virtually left at the postfi closed an immense gap and just got up in the final strides to nose out W R Coes Herodian Mrs S H Smiths Padraig was a distant third beating Joseph E Wideners Be Fair for that part of the purse purseHerodian Herodian was the one to force the pace throughout with Fairness and Be Fair the Widener pair chasing after him while Pad ¬ raig was never far back This order was maintained until well into the stretch when Ruskin came with the sensational rush that landed him the winner
