McTAGGART SCORES DOUBLE Wins With James F OHara and Titina at Long Branch Bean of tbe West Carries Seagram Colon to Victory la Long Branch Handicap TORONTO OnL June 8 The Seagram Stables sterling Canadianbred Beau of the West was returned winner of the opening day feature the Long Branch Handicap at one mile and a sixteenth His margin was a head over Florence Mills which races In the colors of O Viau the Montreal sports ¬ man while just a nose back was R E P ottst English son of Junior Casquetts Lieu ¬ tenant II IIFlorence Florence Mills and Lieutenant II were the first to leave the barrier and quickly raced into command and were well in advance of the others In the run through the back stretch stretchThomas Thomas was bidding his time on the Sea ¬ gram representative and did not call upon Beau of the West until midway of the far turn Beau of the West gamely answered his riders call and began moving up Entering the stretch it was Florence Mills and Lieu ¬ tenant II that were fighting it out while Beau of the West was still in third place Thomas took his mount to the outside and started to ride in earnest Beau of the West responded courageously got on even terms with the leaders ten yards out and dropped his head down in front in the last stride while Florence Mills outstayed Lieutenant II at the finish Penstick was installed the favorite but never figured seriously in the running and pulled up lame lameWEATHER WEATHER GOOD GOODOne One of the largest weekday crowds that ever visited Long Branch was on hand for the opening Weather and track conditions could not be improved d the racing was of the spirited order orderJockey Jockey McTaggart scored a double when he piloted J McKenzies James F OHara to victory in the threequarters mile third race Kingscourt from the Seagram stable finished second while W G Campbells Warehouseman was awarded the third por ¬ tion of the purse James F OHara was the first to show in front as the barrier was re ¬ leased but he was quickly displaced from the lead by Lady McNeill and the latter continued to show the way until nearing the stretch closely followed by Warehouse ¬ man McTaggart sent James F OHara into innmand and the McKenzie colt starter hold ¬ ing on with splendid courage outlasted the fastcoming Kingscourt The latter worked his way through the field and closed with a determined bid but was held safe by tho winner Warehouseman forced the early pace and held on with splendid courage Lady McNeill after showing the most early speed tired badly when the real racing began James F OHara marked the third consecu ¬ tive favorite to score scoreR R M Utterbacks Aversion accounted for the sixth race over the threequarters mile route The unruly Corinth that races in the interest of C Ferraro raced to second place with H Neusteters Pitchfork third The winner dominated the running throughout and easily held Corinth safe at the end Corinth had a rought race but came to the center of the track in the stretch and finished fast but was unable to get to the leader Feeney on Pitchfork saved ground at the head of the stretch and the amount of ground saved was enough to get Pitchfork into the running runningBIG BIG FIELD FIELDA A big field of the cheaper grade platers went to the post in the fourth and it re ¬ sulted in a triumph for Typecutter an out ¬ sider in the betting while Candymaker another long priced one finishing second and Flybook third There was quite a delay at the post when the barrier failed to func ¬ tion properly The winner worked his way through and came to the outside for the final drive and was drawing away as they passed the finish Candymaker after rac ¬ ing Kosciusko into defeat tired when chal ¬ lenged by the winner but easily held sec ¬ ond place safe Flybook went well through ¬ out and was well in advance of Kosciusko the fourth horse at the finish finishKings Kings Ransom was claimed out of the race for 1500 by W J Waterman who was rep ¬ resented in the race by Scissors ScissorsWhen When called on in the stretch Reprove moved up took command and was under restraint all through the final sixteenth in the first race Harry Beal slow to start raced wide entering the stretch and finished with a burst of speed Toanna showed good speed but tired from racing with Trappy in the first threeeighths but was not menaced for third place This marked tho third straight victory for Reprove Inci ¬ dentally W Maher won the opening1 race last spring with Fly Hawk HawkJohnny Johnny McTaggart made no mistake with Titana when the Parr twoyearold was home two lengths in advance of her closest opponent at the finish of the five and a half furlongs second race Oley raced promi ¬ nently for the entire trip and finished sec ¬ ond while Belascoain ran a good race to finish third From a good start Man set the pace closely followed by the ultimate winner McTaggart sent Titina Into com ¬ mand leaving the beak stretch and was not threatened for the remainder of the journey
