PATRICIA J ONLY CANTERS Daughter of Sweep Scores in Easy Fashion at Connaught Park Biggest Crowd In History of Ottawa Track TrackTurns Turns Out for Inaugural IJcal Weather OTTAWA Qnt June 8 The Connaught Park Jockey Club acted as host for the largest gathering that has entered the gates since the opening of this course several years ago when the sevenday meeting was ushered in today under perfect weather conditions The attendance exceeded all expectations and program vendors were sold out long before the bu jle sounded for the second race of the afternoon afternooni i Connaught Park never looked better than at tho present time and with favorable weather conditions and the track rounding into the best shape possible after the rains of last week good time was recorded al ¬ though the course was still on the slow side P F Joyces Patricia J a fouryearold daughter of Sweep Ethelberta accounted for the Queen City Purse the best race that was supplied for the entertainment of the large throng when she spreadeagled her field at all stages of the mile race which attracted the best horses to start during the day Patricia J was installed a prohibitive choice for the race and she justified the heavy play that caused her to return a very small divi ¬ dend Second to the winner and beaten two and a half lengths came Accokeek from E Arlingtons stable while C R Camp ¬ bells Uncertain shared in the purse award by taking down the minor end of the spoils spoilsBack Back of the trio and in order of the finish came Ace of Aces II Two Feathers and Carom CaromTAKES TAKES LONG LEAD LEADGoing Going to the fore before entering the back stretch Patricia J scampered into a long lead and Bourassa only had to sit still for the entire distance to have her well in hand all during the early running and she was never threatened for the leadership at any stage therafter Accokeek made a determined effort to close the gap that sep ¬ arated him from the winner in the last half mile but was not good enough The others showed no signs of being dangerous during the race and were far back at the end The third surprise of the afternoon oc ¬ curred in the third race which was exclu ¬ sively for provincebreds This race was decided over the niile and seventy yards route and Sphericity received the bulk of support but the best she could do was to take second money Royal Pearl scored over the same two that finished in the money division on her last appearance at Thorn cliffe and her race today gave evidence that she is capable of defeating them when in the best of form as at the present time Ifs and Ands was beaten four lengths for second place placeDIGNUS DIGNUS EASY WINNER WINNERDignus Dignus showed her heels to a band of good sprinters in the fifth race another dash over the threequarters route for which she was made the favorite and like Patricia J she scored in hollow fashion Taking command at the rise of the barrier the winner drew into a long early lead and enjoying a six lengths lead at one stage of the journey she was taken under restraint and at the end was showing the way to Medley by four lengths while the latter came with a mighty rush right at the finish to doom Seths Hope Heartache finished in fourth place with the others well strung out Costigan an extreme outsider in the open Ing dash which attracted a field of twelve to sprint the intermediate distance of five and onehalf furlongs made good and caused somewhat of a surprise when he scored easily False Face another witha long price attached to his chances raced to second place beaten three lengths for the large end of the purse and Golden Bloom took down the minor end of the spoils Barrow was installed the choice but after showing the way for a short part of the race fell back steadily and finished sixth sixthThe The second number framed for nonwinners this year brought out nine starters to face the barrier and the second upset of the after ¬ noon came about with the running when Lisab an outsider in the wagering scored to take the measure of the warm favorite Caro line Complaisance finished third after shbw The winner and the third horse were alway In nearest pursuit throughout the race which was decided over the threequarters distance
