FORTY-FIFTH RUNNING OF LATONIA DERBY a Small But Select Field Named to Contest for 5,000 Prize j E. B. McLeans Jock Probable Favorite Bradley Pair, Boo and Buddy Bauer, Do Not Lack Admirers Handy Mandy Also Held in Regard LATONIA, Ky., June 24. A small yet promising field of three-year-olds will contest the forty-fifth running of the 5,000 added Latonia Derby tomorrow. Seven colts, and one filly were named overnight for the prized feature of the Latonia spring program, and, with only one of the field holding place in the doubtful starters class, the race is assured of a field of seven running over the testing distance of one mile and one-half. . Prospective Starters in Latonia Derby LATONIA, Ky., June 24. The prospective starters in the Latonia Derby, together with post positions, weights, riders, owners and trainers, follow: PP. Horse. TVt. Jockey. Owner. Trainer. 1 Jock . 118 C. Lang E. B. Mclean. J. F. Schorr 2 Kolled Stocking.. 118 W. Crump J. W. Parrish C. C. Van Meter 8 Handy .Mandy.... 109 E. Pool H. P. Schorr 7 Boo 121 G. Johnosn...Idle Hour Farm H. J. Thompson 8 Dolan 118 J. Callahan.. .E. F. Cooney E. W. Heffner S S All of the intended starters have trained well for the important engagement, this morning finding Jock, the probable public choice, on the track for his final training. Trainer J. F. Schorr had him "breeze" one and one-eighth mile in 1:55, the gallop being nothing like an exerting task for the rapidly improving son of Colin and Kathleen. He will be ridden by Chick Lang and assisted in the race by Mr. McLeans son of Man o War War Eagle winner of the Miami Cup Handicap and other races during the year. War Eagle, after some disappointing racing here earlier in the meeting, has rounded to nicely and trainer Schorr firmly believed that he will prove a formidable factor throughout the running. Mack Garner will have the mount on War Eagle. Buddy Bauer was out this morning in company with Bewithus for a brisk half-mile gallop, fashioned to give him his best speed for tomorrows race. He was hustled over the half-mile in :46 and, after he cooled out faultlessly, trainer H. J. Thompson expressed himself as eminently satisfied with his condition and chances for the race. Alfred Johnson is Buddy Bauers Derby rider. Rolled Stocking was the only other Derby hopeful out for work during the early morning. He was sent three-quarters in 1:14, being strongly restrained throughout the trial by W. Crump, who will ride him in the Derby. CAN MAIDEN FILLY WIN! The race is furnishing considerable material for conjecture, the most important question being: Can a maiden filly win the Latonia Derby? The presence of Handy Mandy, H. P. Headleys fine maiden filly, and the chances for her success tomorrow, seem to have commanded considerable discussion. Not since Gowell accounted for the Latonia Derby of 1913 has a filly triumphed in the race and never, during the long history of the stake, has a maiden filly been returned winner. Handy Mandy has a host of admirers for the race and a victory would be -immensely popular. "Unless Dolan races in much improved form over his American Derby performance at Washington Park last Saturday, the chances for an eastern triumph are held remote. Ho was beaten by Handy Mandy and Buddy Bauer in the Homewood race, but trainer Heffner confidently believes that Dolan did not like the going and that he may be counted upon to prove a stalwart figure in tomorrow race. Jockey J. Callahan, who will have the mount on Dolan, is expected here from New York tomorrow morning. Jockey Earl Pool came in from Washington Park to ride Handy Mandy. With seven starters the race will havo a net winning value of 4,500, the same as In 1926. This amount Is but ,100 less than the richest Latonia Derby, won by Chilhowee in 1924.
