CONFIRMS MADDEN NAMES i * Registrar of Jockey Club Notifies Kentuckian of Approval. » Xany Promising Descendants of Friar Kock Among Big Band of Juveniles — Well Advanced In Training. ♦ LOUIS VILLI:. Ky.. April 10— John E. Madden has boon notified by the registrar of The . Jockey Club that names he claimed for his i big band of two-year-olds have been approved. Thirty-two of the number are in training at Churchill Downs, while the remainder, to the number of eighteen are at t Hamburg Place. In bestowing names on his horses, Mr. Madden has not followed any set rule. He has, however, succeeded in selecting some appropriate nomenclature. He has been guided. In most instances, not by fancy, but a desire to give some indication of pedigree, a practice that fas growing more common among f owners, and is taking the place of the custom , of bestowing merely complimentary names. Mr. Madden has probably named more t horses than any other man identified with i the turf, either in this country or abroad, and he admitted to a friend a short time ago that the task is not quite as easy as it seems. He is a thorough believer in the custom. long existing in England and Fiance, of selecting names indicative of both sire and 1 dam, or suggestive of one or the other, whenever it is possible to do so. Many of the horses bred and owned by Mr. Madden in years gone by have won fame ! both in this country and abroad, and this ; year he is hopeful that among the youngsters , that he is about to start upon their careers. some may be developed that will add additional luster to the fame of Hamburg Place, and make a name for themselves. Mr. Madden is placing great hopes in some , of the youngsters now at Churchill Downs and which have displayed speed in their 1 preliminary trials. Included in the number are several fine-looking sons of Friar Rock. One of these is a striking looking chestnut, by the good mare Falcon. This youngster has been named Strike. Mr. Madden has | entered his juveniles liberally in all of the Eastern fixtures for two-year-olds, including such important events as the Juvenile, Fashion. Bouquet. United States Hotel. Grand Union Hotel. Spinaway and Hopeful Stakes. All of the horses belonging to Mr. Madden at Churchill Downs wintered exceptionally well and escaped illness that usually afflicts the young horses in the early spring. The horses under the care of William •"Chuck" Walker are well advanced in their training, , and will be ready to carry the colors at 1 either Jamaica or Belmont Park. They are I scheduled to leave for the East April 20. The J stable this year will have the services of a new jockey, in the person of Jimmie Johnson, who. during the winter, was acquired by the stable.
