f MARYLAND TURF NOTES f 4 $ BALTIMORE, Md., May 3. James Fitzsimmons is due here tomorrow with Distraction, a candidate for the Preak-ness Stakes, Nixie, an Oaks candidate and three two-year-olds. Frederick Johnsons Brown Flash was shipped back to Belmont Park this morning. A. G. Weston announced that no attempt will be made to bring Jopagan back to the races until mid-summer. Weston will ship his horses from here to Toronto at the eonclu- sion of the Pimlico meeting. Marshall Cassidy, after a successful meeting at Tijuana, was an arrival. He is on his way to Canada, where he will do the starting on the Canadian Racing Associations tracks again this summer. A report reached here that Freddy Hopkins had severed his connection with the Harry Payne Whitney Stable. Francis Riggs. honorary secretary of the Maryland Jockey Club, and Mortimer Ma-honey will have as dinner guests in the clubhouse here tomorrow the Hon. Senator Bellcourt, Major Ross and Thomas P. Gorman. These gentlemen, identified with the Connaught Park Jockey Club, will spend a couple of days at Pimlico in the interest of the Connaught Park meeting, which will follow that of Thorncliffe Park at Toronto. Willis Sharpe Kilmers promising three-year-old Gift Hawk kicked himself some time during the night and was excused from starting in the Rennert Handicap today. Steeplechase jockey Charlie Mergler has severed his connections with the James Healey stable. It appears that owner A. C. Bostwick wished to ride the English Jockey Duller, hence Merglers decision to ride as a free lance. E. Lane, track superintendent at Timonium, was a visitor. He reported that some 200 horses were stabled- at Timonium and that the track is in excellent- condition. Half miles in :51 were common, according to Lane. The horses that II. J. Kennedy raced in Cuba are at Timonium for the summer. Johnny Campbell. Briar Broom, Zest, Rau-con. The Worker, Emplette, Lass oO.owrie, Helenita, Astronomist. King Bird. Partnership and War Flier have earned places on starter Mars Cassidys schooling list. Every box in the spacious grandstand has been sold for the entire meeting and but few reserved seats remain unsold for Preakness Day. There are 1,300 horses quartered at Pimlico and Timonium. The Maryland Jockey Club furnishes free van services from Timonium to Pimlico and return. Dave Heisman, the fashionable Fifth Avenue clothier, is here for the Pimlico meeting. Heisman has not missed a meeting at this famous old course in a decade. E. S. Weiler and Bob Frend will have 150 horses at the barrier in the mornings. Tetee-"YVraek was among the number this morning. He had blinkers for the first time as part of his equipment. A chance will probably be made by track superintendent Ryan some day this week when the gap at the four and a half furlongs pole leading to the stables located along the back stretch will be closed and the outlet from the track moved to some other point. Jockeys have complained that some of their mounts have attempted to bolt out of the gap at this point. , «
