VICTOR IN CLOSE FINISH o Undercover Defeats Paragraph by Inches in Jamaica Feature. L. McAtee Rides Brilliantly to Score With Knapp Colo;!»o::rcr in Olympic Claiming Stakes. NEW YORK. X. Y.. May 3. — Undercover, from the stable of Mrs. William Knapp, in a desperately fought finish with Clarence Buxtons Paragraph, was winner of the Olympic Claiming Stakes at Jamaica today. This three-ctuarters mile dash was the feature of an excellent program and it was worth ,475 to the winner. "Pony" McAtee had the mount and it completed a double for him, for he brought II. P. Whitneys Tantivy home winner in a close finish with Caricature. The weather was of summer warmth and a big crowd was on hand for the entertainment. The track was at its best and close finishes furnished many a thrill. There was a long delay at the post in the Olympic and Undercover had a shade the best of it when the barrier was released, but Hypnotism at once raced past him to go into a long lead. McAtee did not worry about chasing the Wildair gelding and in that he showed good judgment. He rated Undercover along before the others and was willing to wait for Hypnotism to tire. Tiffin, from the Fair Stable, was right with the Knapp gelding and deputation was also in the front division, while Paragraph, beginning a little slowly, was shuffled back until she was one of the followers and on the inside. It was not until near the stretch turn that McAtee made a serious bid w!th Undercover and as he did the son of Underfire moved up and was soon on even terms with Hypnotism, while Reputation was hanging on well and lapped on the pair of them. In the meantime Paragraph had been so thoroughly blocked on the inside that Fator was forced to go to the outside to find racing room. BE ATEX BY A XOSE. Through the stretch the filly gained with a mighty rush and passing all of them she was just one stride short of catching Undercover, which was only winner by a nose. Reputation was at the heels of Paragraph and it was Edward Arlingtons Clearance that was fourth. As the race was run Paragraph was pounds the best and it was only her misfortune in the mnning that brought about her defeat. The first race was a three-quarters dash for cheap maidens, and it fell to Rudolph Spreckels Mizzlette when she led horn? Charles H. Thieriots Captain Devil, with Flitting Day, from the Meadow Farm Stable, saving third from Edward Arlingtons Hesper. As the race was run Hesper was pounds the best, but being away badly in the field of fifteen he was a bad last in the back ] stretch, and closed an immense gap to be fourth. i It was a great finish came out of the three quarters mile of the Fulton Handicap when : H. P. Whitneys Tantivy just beat home Gif-ford A. Cochrans Caricature, with W. R. Coes Herodian saving third from Bonnie Khayyam. It was the second start and the second victory for Tantivy and he was ridden by "Pony" McAtee. the old Whitney rider, he having the mount because of the suspension of Workman. From a good start Caricature was first to show in front and Kelsay sent her along I into a three lengths lead and then restrained I her. McAtee was right after her with Tantivy, while Fa!s? Pride was well lapped on the Whitney gelding, with Bonnie Khayyam, . Herodian and Sepoy following in the order named. SEPARATED BY INCHES. Rounding out of the back stretch, McAtee J shook up Tantivy and he quickly went to Caricature and the pair drew out to make it a two-horse rr.ee. Caricature had the inside position and was hanging on with rare gameness. Tantivy was right with her stride i for stride until in the last eighth he had his head in front and. at th.» end, increased his advantage to a neck. Herodian came with a I determined rush in the last quarter to bo third, while Bonnie Khayyam also closed some ground to be fourth. As for False i Pride, h.? tired badly anu dropped back, while 1 Sepoy was outrun all the way. The Clarendon Claiming Handicap furnished something of a surprise when Frederick Johnsons Replevin and a maiden, took the lead at the rise of the barrier and was I never headed for the mile and seventy yards distance, to easily lead home H. Segals My Son. which in turn beat Fal de Saint Phalles Champagne for s.-cond place money. Back of the filly came M. A. Silvers Rejuvenation and T. QainbuTa English horse, LAine, well beaten. T. W. OBriens Yirmar. under a good ride by Sande, was winner of the five-eighths , mile dash for juveniles that was the fifth offering. Bud Fishers Glee Club finished with a rush, took second place with the Greentree Stables Irish Holiday saving third ! from Harry. Payne Whitneys Lew Black. This proved a two-horse race all the way. J. McLennan, who came here to close the ; spring stakes at Woodbine Park. Toronto, reported a gratifying answer. George Odom, j J. Fitzsimmon 3, Max Hirsch and other prom- inent trainers named horses. McLennon left for Baltimore for a few days and will then proceed to Toronto.
