I . ANITA PEABODY WINS .#. Peerless Filly Makes Auspicious Debut as Three-Year-Old. » Astonishes Enthusiastic Spectators by Her Easily and Impressively Achieved Triumph. LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 11.— The peerless Anita Peabody, greatest money winner of last year, made her three-year-old racing debut at Churchill Downs today and accomplished the j easy victory that was expected of her. I She did not have to race fast to subdue her j opponents and she registered by a margin of j ten lengths, but should have made it twenty i just as easily. She moved with machine-like ! percision ; seemed to relish her task and, even when being eased, strove to be freed of re- j straint. The impressiveness of her performance astounded even blase turfmen, the more enthusiastic repeating the question, "Why dont they start her in the Derby ; she would win sure !" It has been a long time since a performance has been witnessed at the Churchill Downs course that enthused so many onlookers. Mr. and Mrs. John Hertz were among those who witnessed the fillys inaugural success for the season and were the recipients of many congratulations over her meritorious showing. Anita Peabody was an overwhelming favorite, the heavy support causing her to rule the shortest price of any winner this year. By a freak, such as only can occur in mutuel betting, her place price exceeded by nearly double that of her straight price. She found her stride rapidly and, moving j i into the lead fast, held sway over Miss Lee j throughout. The latter raced well and was in I second place all the journey, beating home Perle dOr with ease. A threat of rain did not serve as a draw- j j back for another big attendance being on j hand to view some excellent sport, featured I j by several close and interesting finishes. ! The three-year-olds that met some older j performers in the fifth race, at one mile, j j were turned back by their more experienced opponents when Royal Julian and Lancer fought it out for the honors. The former was winner by a half length. Lancer finished two lengths in front of Blackwood. Blackwood was much used racing back of the pace set by Hiram and Braybant and, when Royal Julian and Lancer challenged him in the stretch, he found them far too strong to turn back. Braybant and Hiram gave way after three-quarters, during which they showed Blackwood the way by a very short margin in their spirited duel for the lead. While all of the three-year-olds which started here ai:e eligible for the Kentucky Derby, none is expected to start in that race. Carin carried the colors of J. X. Camden to victory over Macks Baby, Manuelita and twelve other older fillies and mares in the opening race. She won in a driving finish a half length over Macks Baby, after Manuelita had forced the early pace. The latter tired badly after reaching the last eighth. Yates rated the winner in front, after the opening sixteenth, and she had much in reserve as she showed the way by two lengths at the end. , Fire On proved winner over four of the better grade distance platers In the third race. The veteran raced to his victory by four lengths over George McCrann, with Pan-dosto third. Cherokee Lee, Marlboro and Mum Ruffin were the other starters, the latter being eliminated when he wheeled at the start and was left. Marlboro retired fast after showing the most speed for three-quarters, and the poorly judged ride E. Pool accorded Cherokee Lee greatly reduced her chances.
