SUN EDWIN TRIUMPHS f 1 ♦ Accounts for Montana Handicap in First Appearance of Year. » Holds Algernon Safe in Concluding Drive — Scots Grey Registers First 1928 Win. ♦ NEW YORK, X. Y., May 11.— Sun Edwin, three-year-o.d sen of Sun Briar — Edwina, •which was making his first start of the year, was returned the winner of the Montana Handicap, the best offering of the Eriday program at Jamaica. Ridden by L. McAfee, Sun Edwin defeated W. R. Coes Algernon and T. M. Gassidys Mi Vida. The return of Sun Edwin to the races was a happy one, and trainer John I. Smith sent a fit horse to the post for the Arden Farm Stable. The start was a moving one, and Sublevado, with EaFl Sande in the saddle, elected to show the way along the inner rail. Sun Edwin was in sec- j 1 end place, with Black Beetle third and Al- • gernon bringing up the rear. McTngue, on | Mi Vida. was quickly in trouble, however, i -and took his mount back to laet place, lb . repeatedly tried to find clear racing room [ on the inner rr.il and, each time he started through, was caught in more trouble. Round- I ing the far turn McAtee sent Sun Edwin into the lead and he quickly opened up a gap. Sublevado began to tire and Algernon moved up on the outside. McTague persisted In seeking racing room on the inner rail and, through the final eighth, drove his mount I i sharply rn:l the big bay colt responded ir. I a courageous manner. He leveled to his work and held Algernon safe thereafter. , THREATENED DOWSPuUR. 1 1 Despite the threatened downpour, the • crowd was well up to the Jamaica Eriday -attendance and the track was fast. • Thirteen platers faced the barrier in the -opening race of the day and the California- ; campaigned four-year-old Short Price, which races for W. T. Anderson, was winner in a drive over T. II. Meade s Herade, while Edward Arlingtons Toeticule was third. The | winner was ridden by G. Rose and was a | forward factor in the running throughout. 4 He raced Foeticide into defe:it entering the j stretch and, under hard driving, drew away and held Herade safe at the end. The lat- ter finished resolutely from a slow beginning | and closed a big gap. Foeticide was a tired j but handy third. Titan, which was away with the leaders, was shuffled back and was 1 force to sustain a drive to maintain his | position, and escaped repeated interference. | The V. R. Ooe stable accounted for its j first victory of the season, when Seofs Grey, a full brother to Silver Fox, which raced for the Rancocas Stable, was an easy winner of the Endeavor Purse, which was at one mile and seventy yards. Scots Grey outran his opponents from the start and at no stage of the running left the issue in | serious doubt. CoUiletti had him under snug I restraint all the way and at the end he was well in hand. Second portion of the purse fell to Cary Winfre., z Flying Sweep, while Lane Allen, from the F. Johnson stable, was third. The field was well mannered at the post and, when the start came, Scots Grey was rushed into the lead. He opened up an easy lead and was followed by Flying Sweep and Lane Allen. The latter two raced heads apart until the stretch turn, but never menaced the %vinner. SHASTA XEGRA EASILY. Shasta Negra. racing for Bradford Brinton and ridden by Joe McTague. was an easy winner of the fourth race, which was for three-year-old mares and upwards. Shasta Negra had but little trouble in defeating seven others and showed the way to R. B. Strassburgers Tour villa and G. A. Cochrans Huette. The early pace was established by Mint Dinah, but she faded rapidly after showing the way for three-quarters and had nothing left to withstand the challenge of Shasta Xegra and Huette. The former drew away rapidly when called upon and Tour-villa, closing with a rush in the final sixteenth, wore down Huette to take second place, while the latter in turn barely managed to outstay the fast closing Dear Lady. A spirited finish came out of the fifth race, which was for two-year-olds, and the winner was H. C. Riddles Lydia B. Her margin of victory was a head over that of Agitate, while Miss Onine was third. Lydia B. was ridden by E. Fator and dominated the running throughout. She stood off determined opposition from Agitate and outgamed the latter in the final drive. Miss Onine finished with a rush on the outside and outlasted Binki in the final strides, to be third. G. W. Coburns Prattle, ridden by E. Wat-ters. was a driving winner of the final race of the day over If. L. Allens Shasta Flapper, while Shiraz was third. The winner improved her position steadily and finished fast through the stretch and in the final drive outlasted Shasta Flapper.
