MUDDY AT HAMILTON, OHIO Booker Celebrates Derby Day by Saddling Winner of Feature Race — Saucy Polly Scores. HAMILTON. Ohio, May 19.— Hal Booker, who piloted Judge Himes to victory for C. K. Ellison in the Kentucky Derby exactly twenty-five years ago, celebrated Derby Day by saddling Fourteen Sixty, winner of the fifth and principal offering at the Fair Grounds this afternoon. The North Star III. gelding was sent into the lead at once by jockey T. Malley, the leading rider here, and, despite strong opposition from Wrack Maid, drew clear of the latter in the stretch drive. His victory was unexpected and he returned a substantial dividend. Wrack Maid, favored by the going, held the others safe. Gladstone made a resolute bid in the last quarter, but his weight took its toll and lie could never improve over third position. Stanmore was prominent in early stages, but quit badly. Rain threatened during the early afternoon, but, despite this fact, much the largest crowd of the meeting witnessed the sport. The first four races were contested over a heavy track and spirited stretch struggles resulted. Following the running of the fourth race, a driving rain swept the course, accompanied by a ga!e of wind. The last four races were run over a muddy track. Saucy Polly graduated from the maiden ranks when she scored a lucky victory in the initial race from Jimmalee and Dow Shoes. Elbee had opr-ned up a commanding lead, but stumbled and fell approaching the stretch turn. Miss Beaverkill fell over her, but both riders were unhurt. Jockey M. McCray also escaped injury when Jimmalee swerved into iiis mount, Rock Trap, causing him to fall midway of the stretch. Aldrich and Winans Smacker accounted for the sixth and secondary feature. She saved ground on the first turn and, working her way up next to the inner rail, shook off Post Mistress entering the stretch and was in hand in the closing stages. Post Mistress continued gamely, and jockey T. Malley attempted to catch Smith, on Smacker, napping near the end. Lena Wood was best of the others. One of the best finishes of the day came in the third race, in which Pure Dee and Jof fought it out the length of the stretch. Pure Dee proved the best, however. Bertram W. came from the rear to be third. Peralta and Earl Pool never left the result in doubt during the running of their respective races. They both opened up long early leads, which the others were never able to overcome. Flying Lula set the pace throughout in the seventh, raced Little Clair into submission, but was hard pressed at the end to stall off Jasonette. The latter was best, but was taken wide on the turns by jockey Phillips and just failed to get up. Pruned was a close third. «
