, w MOUNT ROYAL INAUGURAL MONTREAL, Canada, May 19.— Racing came back to Montreal today at Mount Royal under most disagreeable conditions. Rain fell heavily throughout the morning, making the track extremely deep in mud. On top cf this there were showers during the afternoon and a high wind created further discomfort. Nevertheless, a crowd of 4,000 turned out, indicating that the sport has lost none of its appeal. The track introduced an innovation in a loud speaker which could be heard on all parts of the grounds, through which the positions of the leading horses in the running of each race were announced. It proved very acceptable to the crowd. This is the first time such an instrument has been used on a Canadian race track.
