SMALL FIELD FOR LATONIA DERBY 9 • . Seven Carded to Start in Outstanding Attraction of Latonia Meeting ♦ 1 Contest Expected to Develop Into a Spirited Duel Between Misstep and Toro, Although Galahad Is Considered Dangerous ♦ LATONIA, Ky., June 22. — With a small yet classy field named overnight and prospects high for the first fast track in some time, interest in tomorrows forty-sixth running of the 5,000 added Latonia Derby well overshadowed that manifested in todays racing. It continued to mount rapidly during the afternoon and if weather and track conditions are of favorable nature the race, at one mile and a half, is expected to be run before one of the largest crowds in the history of the famed old course. That visiting enthusiasts are to witness a meeting of some of the outstanding three-year-olds of the year was assured when the overnight acceptances included Leo J. Marks Misstep, winner of the Fairmount Derby and second in the Kentucky 5and American Derbys; Toro, E. B. McLeans winner of the Arlington Park prize; Easter Stockings, winner of the Kentucky Oaks, and Bobashela, victor in the Chesapeake Stakes in the colors of B. B. Jones Audley Farm ; Pink Lily, the good filly of Wm. Dupont, Jr., which gave Easter Stockings such a hard race in the Kentucky Oaks ; P. Reuters good performer Galahad, and Pigeon Hole, a highly regarded one in the stable of H. P. Headley. While there is a slight variation of weights as a result of penalties, the field is regarded as very closely matched and the shrewdest of judges are confident that the race will be most keenly contested. The distance of a mile and a half is generally believed to be to the particular fancy of Toro, Galahad, Bobashela and possibly the two fillies, Easter Stockings and Pink Lily, yet admirers of Misstep are well satisfied with his chances to finish in front at the terminaton of the long course. Figeon Hole is the outsider of the field. Bobashela, Misstep and Toro will carry 121 pounds each, while Pigeon Hole and Galahad get in with three pounds less each and Easter Stockings is to race under 116 pounds. Pink Lilys impost of 113 is the lightest of the seven. ALL CANDIDATES READY. A visit to the stables of the star three-year-olds revealed high confidence in each of the six camps and, while the trainers of less successful ones in previous engagements are aware of the stiff assignments faced by their respective hopes, they are well satisfied with their chances. Much improved weather today worked wonders with the track, which had been in a heavy condition for almost a week and, barring rain, the racing ground should be in tip-top condition for the Derby running. A fast track i3 regarded as a medium that will bring the field more closely together than if the course is soft. With the exception of Bobashela, which : arrived here this morning from Fairmount Park, all of the intended etarters have been i on the grounds for several days at least. • Bobashela unloaded in fine condition and fresh from his brilliant second to Helens Babe in track record time in the recent Statler Hotel Handicap, and his owner and stable attaches are well justified in regad-ing him in high esteem. Racing coupled with Easter Stockings, which had raced brilliantly here, the entry is certain to have a large i following. Trainer John F. Schorr this morning expressed himself as being well pleased with the condition in which Toro is ccming to the race, and Misstep is up to his best racing, according to Mose Lowenstein, his traner. Phil Reuter, who arrived this morning from Fairmount Park, said he would have no excuse for Galahad after the gelding breezed a mile in 1:55% over a heavy track early todax.
