I FIRE ON WINS AT 0DDS-0N . ♦ Popular McPherson Gelding Defeats Marlboro at Latonia. . • Kitty Mullally Finally Graduates From Maiden Ranks by Winning Fourth Race — Amo Wins Third Race. •-♦ LATONIA, Ky., June 22.— Fire On, the six-year-old Under Fire gelding, which has long been one of the mainstays of the stable of John McPherson, added another purse to his earnings for that Tennessee turfman when he easily accounted for the Carthage Claiming Handicap, the main offering at Latonia today. W. Garner got the winner to the finish of the one mile and a sixteenth with four lengths to spare over the Audley Farms Marlboro. A length and a half further back came Capt. George Foster, just a nose in advar.ee of Isostasy. Vole and Cherokee Lee completed the field, which raced over a slow track. The winner, long a big favorite in these parts, probably never scored a more popular victory. He got to the finish amid generous applause, largely prompted by the support accorded him by the large crowd that saw fit to establish him an odds-on choice. W. Garner, who exhibited fine skill in the saddle during the afternoon, shared in the triumph. It was his second winning mount. Fire On was restrained back of the leaders until the last quarter. When Garner called on him he rallied gamely and, taking the lead with a rush, after reaching the stretch, drew away fast from Marlboro in the last eighth. Marlboro was indulged with the early pace making and, while showing the way from the start to the stretch, disposed of Capt George Foster, which essayed to race with him. Capt. George Foster tired badly in the stretch and just lasted to save third place over Isostasy. While the program was lacking in quality, t was fairly good for the day. Improved weather resulted in onj of the most enthusiastic crowds of the meeting. A number of close finishes added to the thrills enjoyed by the gathering. Outsiders were victorious in close finishes in the first and second races, the former de-i veloping a victory for Madam Emelie and the latter fell the way of My Word. Madam Emelie engaged a band of lowly platers at three-quarters, and succeeded in beating Gotham by half a length as the latter led Zorka by a nose. T. Luther was forced to bring the winner from far back and, despite her swerving in the final stages, she held on determinedly to meet the challenges of Zorka and Gotham. My Word was the first victor in some time from the stable of E. B. McLean and he took the second purse of his career by a neck over . Nine other plater two-year-olds tried for honors over the five-eighths with Stelvio landing in third place. Mount Logan gave the winner a real argument in the closing three-sixteenths and but for racing wide on the stretch turn and losing much ground probably would have won. The third race, at three-quarters, for which there were but six starters of the cheaper grade, also resulted in a surprise when Pipe-stem and Moody Mary failed to finish among the more successful trio. The winner was Amo, ridden by T. Root, and her victory was gained in the final sixteenth, where she managed to wear down Colleen O. The latter was an easy second over Clydella, which tired sharply after showing the most ■peed almost to the last eighth. Aided greatly by a skillful and dating rid. by W. Garner, the filly Kitty Mullally. after many unsuccessful attempts, succeeded in getting out of the maiden division, with the running of the fourth race. Agincourt, as well as the winner, was rated in close pursuit of the early pace, made by Make a Wish. and both responded nicely when called en in the last quarter. Third honors fell to Fanta. one of two starters from the Audley Farm Stable.
