ATLANTIS VICTORIOUS -• Daughter of John P. Grier Accounts for Carnarsie Stakes. ♦ Rancocas Stables Grey Chief Finishes Second — Good Day for Virginians at Aqueduct. • NEW YORK. N. Y., June 22— Atlantis, the swift-running two-year-old daughter of John P. Grier — Onna, which races for George D. Widener, was winner of the special feature at Aqueduct today when she took the Canar-sie Claiming Stakes, over the five-eighths route. A. J. Joyner, to obtain the five allowance, used his apprentice rider F. Moon and the boy made no mistakes, having the filly home a handy winner from Grey Chief, from the Rancocas Stable, while the Rose-dale Stables Espinosa was a close third. The race was run through sloppy mud and the time, J5S% for the five-eighths, was remarkably fast, considering the condition of the track. It was another bleak raw day at the course and, with rain falling during the forenoon, many were deterred from making the trip, though a good sized crowd wps on hand and the sport furnished was excellent. An even doz. n went to the post for the Canarsie Stakes and little time was lost at the barrier. Grey Chief, from his inside position, was first to show, while Matthew and Atlantis were clor,- after him. The Rancocas colt was forced to race along on the inside all the way, racing through the deepest going, while Atlantis had the advantage of being farther out and in better footing. It was in the final eighth that Atlantis found her v.-ay into command and through the last eiarhth she was bearing to the inside. Fortunately, she did not impede any of the oth r runners, having speed enough to cross in front. She was going away at the end. while Grey Chief had to be ridden out Vigorously to save second place from Es-pinosa. The Virginians began the day well when Dr. Jones sent Susan Rinehart to the post for P. IF. Faulconer, and W. Garth saddled Royal Rove for Samuel Ross. They finished first and second, in order named, after having dominated all the running. Sehreir.er had the mount on Susan Rinehart and he held her together cleverly in the slippery foojng. Royal Love hung on exceedingly well and she was the only one to give real contention. H. V. Maxwells Mac Day was rather a • distant third, beating George D. Wideners Recognition for that part of the purse. Fourteen cheap ones, to race one mile, was the second race of the day, and it went to King Charles, from the Black Rock Stable, when he led home Philip Deins Buddha, with G. C. Winfreys Manehu saving third place from Supersede. This race was marred somewhat when Commissioner Ilannon wheeled at the barrier and was left at th post. Supersede was away fas. and was ru.died into a long lead by Burke with Loveken back of him and Manehu showing the way to King Charles, which was racing along on the inside end In a good position. Swinging into the stretch. Supersede began to show the effects of the sprinting in front and. as he tired. McGovern was seen working his way up with King Charles. He shook off Manehu an eighth out and, coming clear of the tired pacemaker, he was in command to the end. to win by a length and a half. Buddha had rather a rough trip in the early racing, but he closed a gap to land second place two lengths before the tiring Manehu, while Supersede was all through in fourth place. The fourth was a six and a hair furlongs dash for non-winners of two races, that brought out a field of nine, and they were all three-year-olds. This saw E. F. Cooneys Bridegroom, scoring for the first time this year and ridden by the veteran Johnny Callahan, home an easy winner over Benjamin Blocks Mordear. with H. T. Archibalds Leonardeau beating H. P. Whitneys Sage-boys for third. There was a good finish came out of the five-eighths for maiden Juveniles, that was the fifth offering, when Infinity, from the Sagamore Stable, fought it out to beat Black Watch, from the den Riddle Farm Stable. The pair of them for d the pace most of the way ami Infinity proved the gamer right at the end. Third fell to Calwick, and the others were more or less strung out.
