MUDDY TRACK AT JAMAICA ♦ Greenfield Claiming Stakes Falls to W. Zieglers Golden Plume. » Adverse Weather Fails to Affect Attendance at New York Coarse — Lace Slakes Good In Chatham Handicap. ♦ NEW YORK. N. Y.. May 13.— The Greenfield Claiming Stakes, with ,000 added, for two-year -olds, over five-eighths, served as the feature attraction at Jamaica this afternoon. The race attracted a field of six and the winner came from an unexpected quarter when Mack Garner had William Zieglers Golden Plume home winner by a comfortable margin after a hard drive. Portsur. from the B. and S. Stable, was the one to finish second, a head in front of Wrackster, from the New-tondale Stable, while T. M. Cassidys Mel-telian was fourth. A muddy track, the result of Sunday nights deluge, gave those which favored the softer going an opportunity to earn purses. The change in track conditions did not bother the public which selected several of the winners. Overhead conditions were cloudy, but the crowd was exceptionally big for the day. Little time was lost at the post in the Greenfield Stakes, and when the barrier was released Garner sent Golden Plume into command at once. He showed a liking for the footing and was showing the way to Mel-telian and Portsur, with Godiva and Wrackster close up. There was no change in the running positions until the stretch was reached, and it was here that Portsur moved up on the outside and assumed command. Golden Plume, however, was far from through for he responded to urging and ■teadily drew away. Meltelian was the first to tire and dropped back, and it was then that Wrackster came with a rush next to the inner rail. He finished fast and would have been second in a few more strides. Waterfoul. which lacked early speed, closed a big gap and was going fast at the end. WESTOVERS IBBY WINS FIRST. A sprint claiming race inaugurated the final weeks racing for the Jamaica course and the winner turned up in Westovers Ibby, racing for the Virginia owner, P. H. Faul-coner. She showed the way to Chiclero from the B. B. Stable, with Jefferson Livingstons Orlan. a driving third, over W. T. Andersons Merry Andrew. The winner was at home in the muddy going, dominated the running throughout and after opening up a safe lead was rated along steadily and as a result had sufficient left at the end to hold Chiclero aafe. The latter, from a good start, dropped back, but when put under urging, improved his position steadily and at the end was going strong. The battle for the minor award of the purse between Orlan and Merry Andrew was decided in the final strides, with the former getting the verdict. Kindergarten riders had another opportunity to display their ability in the second race of the day, and Coat OMail, ridden by D. Brice, came from the rear to wear down Mad Sketch in the final drive. Great American was thiru. The race was over one mile and seventy yards and for non-winners under claiming conditions. Mad Sketch assumed the lead on the first turn and was kept in front in the early stages, but far enough away from the inner rail where the going was deeper. It was through this that Great American was asked to race throughout. Coat OMail responded gamely wh.-n called upon, and at the end. after coming past the leaders turning for home, was sent through on the inside when Mad Sketch bore out. The latter tired badly, while Great American was used up racing through the deeper going. The Chatham Landicap for mares, three-year-olds and over, resulted in a victory for the Mcndham Stables Lace, ridden by Kel-»ay, in easy fashion over W. H. Carricks Single Star, while R. C. Winmills Bonnie Khayyam was a driving third before Pretense. Five started, and Lace was held a prohibitive choice over her opponents. So much so that no place price was quoted against her chances. The field was unruly at the post, but left In good alignment. Single Star, which raced In Havana, was the quickest in motion, but she did not draw away from Lace. The latter was in front of the others. On the stretch turn Lace assumed command and from then on it was a question as to the margin of t er victory. Single Star had a wider margin over Bonnie Khayyam, which finished with a rush to wear down Pretense for the short end of the purse. W. F. Benton dropped ,500 in the claiming box and took Meltelian. W. P. Palmer House" Ryan arrived from Chicago for a brief visit.
