TOMMY LAD SURPRISES « Extreme Outsider Accounts for Feature Race at Aurora. » The Doctor Offending Favorite — Ladies Day Crowd Helps to Swell Attendance. — - ♦ AURORA, 111., May IS.— The William Gax-ton Purse, feature attraction at Exposition Park, resulted in a big surprise when the lightly regarded three-year-old Tommy Lad, racing in the colors of O. L. Foster, defeated a good band which started over the three-quarter route in the heavy going. Tommy Lad reached the finish a length in advance of Mrs. L. M. Holmes Braggadocio, the latter in turn defeating S. C. Hunts Uluniu by a similar margin. The race was exclusively for three-year-olds and the recent winner here, H. C. Rumages The Doctor, prevailed as the favorite. The Doctor offended badly wlkn, after racing in a prominent position to the stretch, he quit completely in the final eighth, finishing well back. Flood Control and The Doctor alternately set the pace to the stretch turn, where Uluniu then moved into the lead on the outside. Flood Control dropping out of it completely, ■while The Doctor showed for a time in second place. A sixteenth out Tommy Lad and Braggadocio, until then outpaced by the leaders, suddenly loomed up on the outside in a final belated rush which carried the pair of them past the tiring leaders. Tommy Lad going to the front and safely outfinishinir Braggadocio at the end. The winner had scant support and paid odds of better than forty to one. FAVORABLE WEATHER. Ladies Day brought the attendance up to the usual high mark which has prevailed at this meeting and the fans witnessed high class racing throughout the afternoon. The sport was conducted under favorable weather conditions, although the track was in a heavy state, gradually drying out from the heavy drenching it received Saturday afternoon. It was a lowly band of platers that furnished the contest in the opening race at three-quarters mile, and eleven of them started. The running found La Rerotte, a four-year-old. always well in advance of her opposition from the start and the filly outpaced and outgamed her rivals for the entire trip, never being threatened, She was taken to the outside position at start, but broke favorably from there. Supporter raced In nearest pursuit of the leader and kept second place at his command to the finish. Superfrank was forced to race on the outside, but found the going better there. He was hard pressed for the first three-eighths in shaking off Allah Allah and he seemed to tire thereafter, being unable to reach the leaders. Superfrank was favorite, while La Rerotte was one of the extreme outsiders «md returned her backers enviable odds. VICTORY FOR GILLEM. J. C. Gillems colors were carried to victory In the second race by the overwhelming favorite Black Agate. Macbeth was easily best of the remainder of the small field of starters and took second place. Patsy H. was third. Black Agate was hustled into a long lead in the first half mile and held sway decisively with Patsy H. racing in closest pursuit. Macbeth followed in third place, closely attended by Woodface. Black Agate was ridden where the going was best and proceeded to keep a big lead to near the last eighth, ■whore he showed signs of tiring and then had to be ridden out in the last sixteenth io hold Macbeth safe. The latter came with a good rush on the outside, easily disposing of Patsy EL for second place. There was an extremely close finish in the third race in which the two-year-old Easter Seth just managed to poke her nose in front of Windy Ross as they reached the finish, ■wresting the decision from the favorite in the final strides. Lyda Mae held third safe from the start and landed in advance of Curtain Cali. Easter Seth raced into the lead at the start and set the pace to the stretch, closely attended by Windy Ross. The leaders came wide entering the stretch, keeping to the best part of the track, and near the last eighth Windy Ross head -d and passed Easter Seth into the lead on the outside. Hesitation, racing in her best form and showing a decided liking for the difficult footing, cantered home an easy winner in the fifth race, making it another victory for the George Collins stable. Ridden by V. Smith, the filly was in command at all stages of the one mile and seventy yards and showed the way to her opponents by a big margin throughout. Elmer H., which landed in second place, was close in pursuit of Frostilla Girl for the first three-quarters and then, after racing the latter into defeat, easily held Frank Hawley safe at the end. Frank Hawley bested the remaining six starters for third place. Frank Hawley was the favorite, but was badly outpaced and failed to show anything worthy of consideration in the way of opposition for Hesitation. Semper Felix was winner from a poor band of platers which started in the sixth race over one mile and a sixteenth. He raced in game fashion after being almost left at the post and far back in the early stages, worked his way steadily toward the leaders and wh n able to reach a contending position in the stretch, then wore them down rapidly, getting up in the final few yards on the inside of Immernoch to take the verdict by half a length. Prig and Immernoch staged an interesting duel throughout the race, Immernoch succeeding in outstaying Prig for second place. Immernoch set the pace to midway of the stretch, but tired and was bearing out badly from near the end. A surplus of purses occurred for Tuesday, May 14, amounting to 00, which was added to Wednesdays races as follows : First, second and third races, 00 ; fourth race, ,100.
