FINAL DERBY WORKOUTS ♦ Blue Larkspur and Clyde Van Dusen Each Galloped One Mile and a Quarter * Son of Black Servant Works in Company with Bay Beauty Over Muddy Track — Bradley Star Timed in 2:13 3-5 — Gardner Gelding in 2:19 « LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 14. — Blue Larkspur, E. R. Bradley3 public choice for Saturdays running of the Kentucky Derby, has had his final preparation for that engagement, the most important for a three-year-old on the American racing calendar It was over a water-surfaced, muddy track that the favorite was given that final gallop over the Derby route of one mile and a quarter. Trainer H. J. Thompson had the son of Black Servant — Blossom Time under saddle at an early hour this morning and at a time when rain was falling in torrents. Bay Beauty, the son of Black Toney — Blushing Beauty, and a half brother to Bagenbaggage, which is expected to assist Blue Larkspur in the assignment of attempting to carry their owners colors to their third Derby triumph, accompanied the favorite in the long work. After galloping a mile they were taken to the head of the stretch and, beginning their workout at the point of the Derbys starting, ran the first quarter in :26%. They were on even terms and continued to maintain equal speed, negotiating the next quarter in like time and were head and head as they finished the three-quarters in 1:19% and a mile in 1 :47. In the final quarter Blue Larkspur overwhelmed Bay Beauty, which failed to keep pace, and the latter, ridden out, finished the one mile and a quarter in 2:14%, as against 2:13% for Blue Larkspur. The latter was never fully extended, his rider maintaining a hold on him throughout. It was a very impressive display of ability under the most trying track conditions that have prevailed here in several seasons. Trainer Thompson described his condition after the trial as "very satisfactory" and the colt "cooled out" in fine fashion, as did Bay Beauty. Thompson has since said he tried Blue Larkspur over a muddy track at Mr. Bradleys Idle Hour Farm near Lexington, and contended that he is well suited by such footing. Following their trials today the two were adjudged ready for their best performance, and, but for short trials to give them their best "foot," their preparation is completed. Thompson was not alone among the trainers of Derby candidates who elected to send their charges over the Derby distance this morning. H. P. Gardners Clyde Van Dusen, generally regarded as Blue Larkspurs most dangerous rival, was given an easy trial over one mile and a quarter in 2:19. His work, under the supervision of trainer Clyde Van Dusen, was one of -the first of the training period and the gelding was returned to his stall some time before track activity got into full swing. Chicatie, Mrs. Vanderbilfs candidate, had a handy work over the same distance and was timed in 2 :15%. His gallop was supervised by Alex. Gordon, who arrived Monday from New York. Chicatie was timed in :26y5, :54%, 1:22% and in 1:49% for a mile. Essare was sent the mile in 1:50%. the quarter in :27%. half mile in :54%, and three-quarters in 1:22. He is here in charge of John Johnson, who is confident he will redeem himself for his Preakness showing. Upset Lad, from the Belle Isle Stable, was sent three-quarters in 1:24%, a very easy trial. Paul Bunyan displayed no little ability in the mud. running a mile in 1 :47 very handily and easing up an additional quarter in 2:15. He went the quarter in :25%. half in :51%, and three-quarters in 1:17%. It was a creditable move.
