ALTO AURORA WINNER 1 Three - Year - Old Supremus Colt Victorious in Feature. ♦ Gets Up in Final Strides to Defeat C. B. Irwins Short Price — Heavy Footing Prevails. AURORA. 111., May 14.— Alto, three-year-•ld son of Supremus — Howdy, which races in the colors of Mrs. J. W. Smith, furnished a thrill and accounted for the best race scheduled at Exposition Park this afternoon. At the end of five and a half furlongs, over the difficult going which prevailed, the colt only succeeded in winning a head in advance of C. B. Irwins five-year-old Short Price, getting up in the final few strides to take the measure of the Irwin racer. Orestes II., tiring badly at the end of the short dash, succeeded in outstaying Good Shepherd by half a length margin for third place. Old Kickapoo, racing for O. L. Foster and a pronounced favorite, proved a big disappointment, finishing well back of the leaders. Charm set the early pace closely attended by Old Kickapoo and Orestes II., while Alto ■was seemingly outpaced in the early stages. Short Price was kept within striking distance close to the leaders. Upon entering the stretch Charm quit, giving up the lead to Orestes II. The latter then showed in front to the final eighth, where he gradually was passed by Short Price, the latter racing on the outside. Meanwhile Alto also charged up on the outside of the leaders with a belated challenge and a few yards out caught Short Price and. as their heads were on even terms, Alto sildenly lurched lightly against Short Price and savaged him with a seemingly playful attempt to bite him about the head. Despite Altos brief delay in advancing, while attempting to savage Short Price, the three-year-old managed to head Short Price for the verdict as they passed the finish. ROCKY WAY GRADUATES. Rocky Way, which has been improving Readily in his recent races at Aurora, ran true to form and accounted for the purse In the opener. He took the measure of a limit field of maiden three-year-olds over five and a half furlongs, thereby graduating Into the winning class. At the end he was a safe margin before the fast finishing Geo. Terry, helding the latter safe in the last seventy yards, while Geo. Terry beat home Chris. Pas- hen by a length. Bunn Outlerkirk finished in fourth place after making a fast move entering the stretch, only to tire again in the final eighth. Rocky Way took command after the start and gamely set the pace throughout. For a time he was hard pressed, Eunice Atwell racing right with the leader to midway of the stretch. However, the P. T. China racer eventually succeeded in racing his rival into defeat and had the situation well in hand in the final stages. A. G. Tarn furnished another winner in the ▼eteran sprinter Wi.drake, which landed in advance of the small field which ventured out in the second race of the day. Timekeeper finished in closest pursuit of the winner, barely outfinishing Sturdy Stella for second place. In the first quarter mile Wild-rake, the favorite, was outrun by Catch Him, ■with If. Rose in the saddle. Catch Him seemingly was about to race .iway in a long lead and leave the others far behind, but aft-r making the far turn, his rider foolishly guided him too close to the inside rail where .the going was more difficult. When taken to the heaviest part of the track, Catch Him began tiring rapidly and was immediately overtaken by Wildrake and the latter, once in the lead, never relinquished his advantage. M. Rose kept racing Catch Him in the worst part of the track even in the stretch racing, which caused the W. If, Cain racer to tire badly and he was an easy victium for both Timekeeper and Sturdy Stella. The winning streak of the favorites was eontinuid in the third race when the Jones Stock Farms youngster. Foxy Beth, was returned a ridiculously easy winner over the Continued on sixteenth page. Foxy Seth cantered in six lengths in advance of Goose Step, after being in the lead from soon after the start. He raced into a long lead near the stretch turn, iiureased it at will in the run home and had plenty of speed to spare at the finish. Goose Step, unable to threaten the leader, always held second place safe and was as easily the best of the remaining starters. Patsy Lewis turned in a good performance and finished fast in third place. Miles Prior took a liking to the track and was returned a handy winner of the fifth race. He defeated Sincerely, Red Spider and five others which started over the three-quarters route. Miles Prior took the lead from Sincerely in the stretch and, keeping his lead, lasted to win by a safe margin though tiring badly at the end. Sincerely outfinished Red Spider for second place. Ritter was another favorite supplied by the O. L. Foster Stable, also proving a disappointment. Ritter raced well to the stretch but was then ridden in the worst part of the track close to the inner rial, tiring completely near the end, and failed to do better than wind up fourth. A
