CURATE SCORES AT BELMONT « Carries J. E. Wideners Colors to Triumph Over Sunvir. ♦ Qualifies for Withers Stakes in Pleasing Fashion — Accident Mars Start of Race, Altitude Stumbling. • NEW YORK, N. Y., May 27.— Principal interest in the racing at Belmont Park today centered about the running of the one mile condition race, for the three-year-olds, in which two of the Withers candidates, Joseph E. Wideners Curate and W. R. Coes Dail. started. Curate was winner by a narrow margin, while Dail was only beaten a head for second place by Sunvir. It was an excellent trial for the one mile prize of Thursday and, as a matter of fact, W. Garner was to blame for the finish being so close. He had Curate winning with a safe lead when he foolishly eased up the son of Fair Play and before he could have him in full stride he was within a stride of being beaten. In this race there was an accident at the start when Altitude stumbled so badly leaving the barrier that Fields was unseated, but fortunately escaped injury. With bright, warm weather an exceedingly large crowd was out for the sport. The track was at its best and the sport worthy. When Altitude stumbled along until he unseated Fields, he interfered a bit with some of the others and, as a result, the start seemed to be a bit straggling though all nine that started left in good alignment. Curate left the post in good fashion and suffered no interference. Garner at once sent him right along until he had opened up a lead of three lengths. Once in front, he took hold of the colt and had no trouble in increasing his advantage. Dail was in second place and in hand, while Holiday ran at the heels of the Coe colt, and Chicatie was not far back. Sunvir was well back, having been one to suffer by reason of the accident to Altitude. GARNERS MISTAKE. It was not until the stretch was reached that Sunvir came seriously into the running. There E. Watters sent him up next to the inner rail, and he was alongside Dail, but Curate was still well clear until Garner made the mistake of easing him up. The other two finished with a great rush, but the Widener colt had lasted to be winner by a head, the three finishing heads apart and four lengths before Lisa, G. W. Lofts Mabla, a daughter of On Watch and Sox, beat a band of juvenile fillies in the opening four and one-half furlongs dash over the Widener Course. My Brentwood Girl raced to second place, and third was the portion of Mrs. K. E. Hitts Fair Dawn. Right at the start Andra swerved sharply and did not leave with her usual rush. Then she was knocked about a bit and finally brought up running on the outer rail. In the meantime, Mabla and El Relicario, a filly that was unbeaten at Miami, forced most of the pace and, in the final eighth, the winner came away steadily to be home with plenty to spare. My Brentwood Girl and Fair Dawn both finished resolutely, while the Miami filly quit badly and it may be she needed the race. The steeplechase race of the day was remarkable chiefly for its accidents when only three of the six starters completed the course. The winner turned up in Wayfair, from the Rolling Plains Stable, and Edward R. Bradleys imported jumper. Silver Dawn II., just beat home Thomas Hitchcocks Darkness for second place. The mistakes began at the first jump, where Tammaro rolled from the back of Red-bridge, when he made a bad landing over the brush. Then at the water. Archway, while leading, refused and as he swung at the fence he fell and also knocked Foretime in such a fashion that the son of Foreground blundered over the fence and fell in the water. ■
