FRENCH DERBY TO HOTWEED Favorite, Bidden by American Jockey Guy Garner, Carries Off Famous Race. SPECIAL CABLEGRAM. PARIS, France, June 17. — The result of Prix du Jockey Club French Derby, the classic mile and a half race for three-year-- old colts and fillies, run for the eighty-ninth time at Chantilly Sunday, was generally accepted as a great stimulus for the sport in this country. Victory fell to Edward Esmonds Hotwecd, the even money favorite, ridden by the American jockey Guy Garner. It was a doubly popular triumph. Not only was Hot-weed the public choice, but his owner is a liberal supporter of racing. Hotweed won by a length from Sol Joels Charlemagne, piloted by A. Esling. Comte de Rivauds Cordial, with G. Valard up, was third, two lengths away. There were twenty starters. The best horse won, but he is not an exceptional thoroughbred. Hotweed, a son of Bruleur — Sea Weed, is the best of an ordinary crop of three-year-olds this year. Victory in the Grand Prix de Paris is now generally conceded him. Derby Day was marked also by a victory for the American owner, Ralph Beaver Strassberger. Gloss! n won at one mile and a quarter for him. Glossin was 50 to 1. Joseph E. Widener was deprived of a victory by disqualification on Saturday at St. Cloud. Magician II. carried his silks to the fore in a driving finish. M. McGee had the mount. W. Sibbritt, who rode the second horse, claimed that McGee had 1 limped him. McGee countered with the charge that Sibbritt erred in trying to come through. The officials agree with Sibbritt. They disqualified Magician II. and suspended McGee for one day. A.
