June 17— The Tower Grove Purse was the feature of this afternoons racing provided by the Fairmount Jockey Club at Fairmount Park and in this one mile and seventy yards contest the Paradise Stock Farms Yam Toy furnished a big upset with a suddenly improved performance to be the winner and he vanquished such good ones as Lane Allen. Sun God II. and Herade. There were only five starters and the other one, Gagliardo John, was outrun and outclassed at all stages. Yam Toy reached the finish one length in advance of Lane Allen, after holding the latter safe all during the final drive, which lasted the entire length of the stretch. Lane Allen was unable to menace Yam Toy after passing the final eighth and the winner drew away from hia rival again in the final sixteenth. Lane Allen easily outstayed Sun God II., which only managed to get up to outfinish the tiring Herade for third place. Lane Allen ridden by V. Smith, was aa-ways the most in demand for the feature race, and prevailed a prohibitive favorite. Herade took the lead at the start and set a good pace to the far turn, where Yam Toy gradually caught up with and passed the leader. While taking the lead from Herade it appeared that J. Berry, astride Yam Toy. came across sharply on Herade with his mount and Herade was knocked back seriously, her rider having to restrain her considerably for the next few strides. Herade seemingly tired after this mishap and never fully recovered for the remainder of the distance. Ideal weather and track conditions were the rule for the conduct of the sport here this afternoon, which was witnessed by another good crowd. The rough riding, which J. Berr displayed astride Yam Toy in the running of the Tower Grove Purse, brought about quick action on the part of the stewards and jockey Berry was suspended for five days for his offense of roughing and cutting in front of the leading Herade after they had passed the far turn. There was an upset in the initial race, a claiming dash of five and a half furlongs for two-year-olds. Gotta Gonow, from the stable of J. Dreyer, racing in the colors of J. H. Patterson and capably ridden by the apprentice V. Smith, carried off the purse, in a spectacular finish, with the winner just getting to the leaders in the final few yards, to pass Patsy Lewis and finally outgame Pink Blossom, which saved second place. The latter went into the lead inside the last sixteenth, but was unable to hold it. Patsy Lewis, which took the lead on the inside entering the stretch when the leaders went wide, also tired in the final drive and was luc« y to land third. Valdosta began fast and showed the most early speed to near the stretch turn, where he began running out badly and losing some ground, which caused his defeat. Dorothy Lea, becoming a strong factor on the inside near the last eighth, was suddenly taken up when in close quarters and could not recover.
