PRINCE ATHELING BEST Stretch Rush Results in Victory for Marsch Colt Winner Races Distance Within WithinFifth Fifth of a Second of Home wood Track Record HOMEWOOD 111 May 29 Staging a strong stretch rush which eventually brought him victory Prince Atheling threeyearold colt which races for J Marsch won the Sheridan Road Purse this afternoons best race at Washington Park The seven furlongs race came fifth on the program and the son of Atheling II in winning just missed the track mark by onefifth of a second His time was 124 and he defeated Supreme Sweet by a nose Tippy Toe was third Dedi ¬ cate a distant fourth and Cabildo last in the field of five fivePrince Prince Atheling was wellbacked and jockey Paul Neal who had the mount evidently realized the colts ability for he permitted him to remain many lengths back of the leaders in the early stages and did not urge the animal until the stretch was reached Supreme Sweet which recently changed hands via the claiming route set the pace closely followed by Tippy Toe Dedicate was third in the early stages while Prince Atheling was fourth and Cabildo far back backComing Coming to the stretch turn Supreme Sweet increased his lead and clinging to the rail headed for home four lengths to the good At midstretch however the leader began to tire and Tippy Toe moved up while Prince Atheling began his rush and replaced the tiring Dedicate in third place In the last furlong Prince Atheling loomed up as the real danger and passing Tippy Toe set out to overtake Supreme Sweet Inch by inch he gained with every stride and reached his objective less than five yards from the finish finishGOODLY GOODLY SIZED CKOWD CKOWDThe The day was dark and cloudy and rain threatened throughout the afternoon The downpour failed to materialize however and the track remained in firstclass condition A good crowd was present presentRed Red Spider which on his last appearance at Aurora was badly beaten ran in im ¬ proved form under jockey Keisers guidance to win the opening race The gelding was in front for every inch of the threequarters distance and at the end had an advantgae of a neck over Quibbler Jim Pryor ridden by the veteran jockey Borel was third Quib ¬ bler ran the best iace and deserved victory He came from last place to press the winner at the finish but could not get up in time to win Red Spider was an outsider Santa Sophia being favored favoredAn An unruly band of maidens went to the post in the second race and it was twelve minutes before they could be dispatched During the delay Lawyer threw his rider and ran away six furlongs before being captured while Royal Canopy fell at the barrier and unseated his rider C M McKenna the favorite was an easy winner but Lawyer was probably the best horse After his runaway he showed the way to the stretch but had nothing left when challenged Nursie finished third The race was over six furlongs furlongsHACES HACES LTP TO HIS ZSAME ZSAMESpectacular Spectacular ridden in good fashion by jockey Legnon scored an impressive victory in the third race The race was over one mile and seventy yards and the winner though off in last place and in a pocket in the early stages proved good enough to mow down his opponents and win easily Second place went to Ruane while Yam Toy fin ¬ ished third The winner was the medium of a heavy play in the machines and her vic ¬ tory was popular McGonigle carried the hopes of many of the fans but failed to earn any part of the purse purseDon Don Alvaro the good looking chestnut colt which performed creditably in the Far West during the past winter made his eastern debut in the fourth race and defeated a good band of twoyearolds in easy fash ¬ ion Ridden by jockey Gorbett he won cas ¬ ing up by four lengths The son of Runny mede went to the front as soon as the har ¬ rier was released and was many lengths in advance of the others all the way The real battle was for second place and Zebra fin ¬ ishing gamely got the verdict over Miss Chilla at the finish Tan Face had many supporters in the race but was never a contender Rain started to fall as the sixth race was being run and the air suddenly turned very cool Haramzada was the winner of the race and scored by many lengths He was always in a prominent position and heading the small band in the last quarter was under restraint at the finish Wizardry and Burnt Brown both made up much ground to finish second and third respectively Willing the early pacemaker tired badly and was un ¬ placed
