GERARD IS BEATEN AGAIN Favorite in Thorncliffe Feature Succumbs to SUnvir Stcalnwny Graduates in Second Easily EasilyDefeating Defeating Cock Robin Little Scout ScoutIs Is Winner of the Fourth TORONTO Ont May 29 Once again to ¬ day a good number dared the threatening weather to journey to Thorncliffe and again the weather man relented and except for a few light showers the climatic conditions Avere favorable to good racing An ordinary offday card was presented and with the exception of the first two races all the contests were under claiming conditions Of these the fifth brought out the best field of the day when ten of the better class platers quartered at the track met over a seven furlongs test Favorites had been sharing the honors with outsiders up to the fifth race and in that event the favorite Garard was relegated to second position when after setting the pace for most of the route he faltered in the drive through the stretch to succumb to Sttnvir which led him home by a margin of a length and a quarter A length further back was H G Bedwells Red Briar which raced in third position for the entire journey journeyWhen When the field had settled into stride Gerard was sent out into the lead and was followed by Night Hawk and Red Briar with Sunvir next in line At the halfmile mark McGinnis had taken a lead of four lengths with the Palmwood Stables repre ¬ sentative and the three which followed near ¬ est were all running closely lapped Night Hawk quit when the real racing began and Sunvir advanced into second place In this order they moved into the stretch with Sun ¬ vir closing up the gap between himself and Gerard When straightened out Sunvir came on very fast and displaced the leader a few yards out and was going away at the end endREFINERS REFINERS POPULAR WIN WINThe The Thorncliffe Stable scored in the first race when Refiner galloped home to an easy and popular victory Refiner was one of the dozen Canadianbred maidens that went to the post Brave Alonzo was made fa ¬ vorite Loves Arrow set a rapid pace and he continued in front until making the turn into the home stretch where Refiner moved up and passed him In the final furlong Refiner kept increasing his advantage until he had a lead of two lengths and a half Archipelago was second three lengths in front of Rose Lady which beat the tiring Loves placeSteal Arrow half a length for the place Steal Away a Bunting filly that races for the Elm Tree Stable turned in the first winning effort of her career when she took the measure of seven other juvenile maidens in the second race The winner had a mar ¬ gin of four lengths over her nearest rival R Whitneys Cock Robin Trice was but a head in the wake of Cock Robin RobinCharley Charley J S was best of the band that he met under claiming conditions in the third race but his best was needed to take the verdict from Shasta Pebble by the mar ¬ gin of a half a length Third was the portion of Fair Bob which was two lengths in the wake of Shasta Pebble PebbleGrab Grab Bag was first to show in front but Fair Bob was close at hand and Shasta Pebble was up with the first division while Charley J S which was slow to get go ¬ ing worked his way up into contention at the half mile post On the far turn Shasta Pebble moved up and took a small lead over Fair Bob while Grab Bag was beginning to show signs of tiring Charley J S finally made his move also and rap ¬ idly wore down the leaders and coming fast in the stretch assumed command Shas ¬ ta Pebble came again and gained much ground but the effort came too late and he had to be content with second place award while Fair Bob was no longer a threat threatLITTLE LITTLE SCOUT TO FORE FOREThe The fourth race attracted the sfnallest field of the day and H C Hatch supplied the winner when Little Scout was ridden out to take a length and a half verdict over Thymon Four lengths back of Thymon came Rock Candy Willingdon Euphrates and Fair Girl completed the abbreviated field and finished in the order named namedWillingdon Willingdon was the one that set the pace and he was taken out into a long lead at the quarter mark with Little Scout follow ¬ ing in closest attendance and Fair Girl next in line At the half mile there was no change in the positions of the leaders but Thymon had moved up and was lapped on Fair Girl On the far turn Willingdon began to shorten strides and Little Scout moved into command and drew away into a three lengths advantage with Thymon in sec ¬ ond place and Willingdon falling back rap ¬ idly Thymon moved up dangerously in the run through the stretch and jockey Riley on the Hatch colorbearer was forced to rouse his mount to make victory certain Rock Candy gained fast to pass tiring horses right at the finish
