EASY FOR PIGEON HOLE Headley Racer Romps to Victory at Washington Park ftTriumph Adds to Good Eecord of Favorites During Afternoon Galahad Finishes Second HOMEWOOD 111 June 9 Only four horses went to the post for the Stewart Drive Purse the principil race on todays program at Washington Park and the race over one mile and seventy yards lacked all semblance of a contest Pigeon Hole the winner pro ¬ vided by H P Headley won by four lengths cased up after leading throughout The Reuter Stables Galahad led J N Camdens Martinique by ten lengths for second place placeIWacker IWacker Drive under the J J Coughlin colors came to the place of finish fifteen lengths back of Martinique The result added to an already good showing by the favorites and thus made some amends for the ab ¬ sence of contention Pigeon Hole turned in his winning effort the first of the year before another large crowd and favorable weather and improved track conditions were in order Away in front the victorious son of Hoi lister and Pigeon Pie was never out of the lead During the first half mile he held sway under jockey Finnertys restraint but there was a loosening of his riders hold on the turn and drawing away into a safe safelead lead Finnerty made him take matters easy during the major part of the run through the long stretch After the half mile post Martinique which jockey Neal repeatedly took back failed to resist Galahad and the latter raced along second thereafter In the stretch he drew far away from the tiring Martinique and Wacker Drive and the latter was eased up after being hopelessly distanced some three sixteenths from the end endI3IPHESSIVE I3IPHESSIVE PERFORMANCE Pigeon Hole a threat in recent Kentucky faces and third on the occasion of his first start at the Homewood track ran the one mile and seventy yards in 144 5 yet with stronger contention might easily have im ¬ proved upon that showing over the good track Like Galahad and Wacker Drive he carried 111 pounds while Martinique was in receipt of her sex allowance allowanceIn In most instances todays winners raced home with commanding margins but the sport was good and the showing of favorites at least on a par with the best on previous days during the meeting meetingR R A Smiths Overboard wellbacked and ridden by apprentice Austin was an easy winner over Valdosta Coral Beach and four other threeyearolds in the first race This was decided over threequarters and the victor under a good ride led throughout Upon disposing of Long Run he drew away and held Valdosta safe at the end After reaching the stretch Long Run which kept in close early pursuit of the winner tired while Valdosta also a factor from the start held on gamely to take second place by a head from the fastfinishing Coral Beach BeachOne One of the most decisive winners of the season turned up in the second race when In Between E B McLeans homebred daugh ¬ ter of Colin and Kathleen and a full sister to Jock scored her maiden victory by twelve lengths over Bubola a daughter of Bub ¬ bling Over making her first start Josephine D was third with nine others all from among the maiden juvenile fillies participat ¬ ing The winner displaying sharp improve ¬ ment over her previous efforts at the same course led almost from the start and after drawing far away from Josephine D con ¬ tinued to increase her margin as the latter gradually succumbed to Bubola which came from far back with a rush in the final quar ¬ ter Chicago Girl and Regal Lady which came in for no little support went down without apparent mishap the former finish ¬ ing in fourth was the winner Setting his own pace and leaving no doubt of his superiority the winner sprinted home four lengths in the van of Devon and Yam Toy with Rolling Sea fourth For a good part of the race Yam Toy kept nearest in pursuit of the winner only to tire badly in the final drive and losing ground was several lengths back of Devon at the end Whiskarm which also displayed early speed gave way badly after threequarters and was last in the field of seven at the end endTan Tan Face came through with her second victory in consecutive starts when she just lasted to earn the decision from Grey and energetic iiding by ap ¬ prentice Marcum the winner headed Fool ¬ hardy for the lead after reaching the stretch but began tiring after drawing clear and the more courageous Grey Kitty was rapidly wearing her down at the end Blocked in the stretch when she attempted to get through along the rail Zebra was retarded in her belated rush but obtained room in time to overhaul the tiring Foolhardy and Beige and finished fast fastWhiskery Whiskery clicked off his first winning race since returning to competition after failing as a stock horse when he easily defeated Ellice OddsOn Ironsides and four others in the seveneighths sixth race qr Windsor Park Purse Ellice lost the lead to the vic ¬ tor after showing the way to the stretch and losing by five lengths stalled off Ironsides by a length for second place As JOilice cut out the early pace Willie Garner had the winner in second place and responding strongly when called upon he was not long at tftking command and drew out fast in the final drive
