Caruso was winner of the best Belmont Park offering when he led home Willis Sharpe Kilmers Sun Beau They were the only starters and the race was run during a drizzling rainstorm that continued all after ¬ noon The course was deep in mud mudThis This was the first appearance of the year for the Kilmer champion and a final prepa ¬ ration for his engagement in the Queens County Handicap at Aqueduct Wednesday The track condition was evidently against the chances of the son of Sun Briar and his race should do a good deal in fitting him for his Wednesday engagement in which he will be the top weight with 127 pounds poundsThe The day was miserable for the sport just as it has been for many of the Belmont Park days Rain fell all afternoon and after the downpoilr of the night before the track was deep in mud This condition resulted in many scratches and a program that gave promise of having some unwieldly fields was pruned down materially materiallyIn In the Sysonby Purse the race which went to Caruso arid incidentally the first victory of the year for the Coe threeyearold the two left at the first attempt though Coltiletti took a shade the worst of it with Sun Beau Fator at once took a good hold of Caruso and he was content to rate him along Coltiletti had Sun Beau at his heels and the big bay was going well but it was soon apparent that Caruso could draw away at the first asking askingGoing Going to the stretch turn Fator shook up the threeyearold and he drew away with little trouble In the stretch Sun Beau gained some ground but was beaten by a length and a half although Fator could easily have increased the winning margin marginA A promised field of twenty platers in the last race was cut to six by scratches be ¬ fore post time This was over one mile and a sixteenth and it was George De Mar that was first home when he outgamed Sanford in a stretch drive E R Bradleys Night Signal saved third In the stretch Coltiletti crossed over sharply with San ford and seriously interferred with both Force and Night Signal Continued on twenty second page CARUSO DEFEATS SUN BEAU Continued from first page After the finish Coltiletti was called be ¬ fore the stewards and after he had been questioned Sanford was disqualified from second place and Night Signal moved up While third was awarded Voyage Coltiletti was suspended for the remainder of the meet ¬ ing by the stewards Twoyearold maiden fillies of the plater variety started in the opening race through the Widener course and Willis Sharpe Kil ¬ mers Dark Edwina a homebred daughter of Traumer and Edwina was winner after a drive with Arthur B Hancocks Irish Maiden with George D Wideners Reproof just beating Green Light from the Sagamore Stable for third thirdGreen Green Light and Reproof were always close up and Coltiletti got Dark Edwina up in the final furlong to have her the winner Irish Maiden also finished fast and both showed a decided liking for tlie muddy going goingInfant Infant the French son of Harpocrate which races for George Willing Jr was winner of the short course steeplechase It was the second start in this country for the fiveyear old and on the other occasion he had raced third to Road Agent and Bold Knight after Christian his rider had lost a stirrup at the second jump jumpIn In this it was another importation the second from the R B Strassburger stable that raced to second place with Mrs C V B Cushmans Dragon de Vertu easily saving third from B G Guths Thomas Paine PaineThe The Ace II was the one to set most of the pace and it was only at the last jump that Infant caught him and beat him home Dragon de Vcrtu after following the pace of The Ace H tired rather badly at the end and Byron after racing well tired in the final half mile in a manner to suggest that he needed the race raceThe The third race was another that was for fillies It was for threeyearolds over the seven furlongs route and Enid from the Audley Farm Stable and greatly favored in the muddy going was winner over the Glen Riddle Farms Red Cross Sister with Mrs William Zeigler Jrs First Lady saving third from Black Mammy MammyThe The field was sent away to a moving start and First Lady was at once taken out to set the pace and showing the way to Keep On Then followed Spellbound Enid and Black Mammy with Valenciennes in the rear First Lady held her lead until well into the stretch On the turn for home Garner went out slightly with First Lady in search of the best going while Rose saved ground with Red Cross Sister Keep On was still in contention but Spellbound was dropping back while Enid was gaining fast on the outside outsideIn In the final furlong Enid caught the lead ¬ ers to be winner by a length and a half Red Cross Sister outlasted First Lady for second place while Black Mammy after being badly outrun gained some ground to be fourth but she was another two lengths back backThere There was a considerable delay at the thepost post in the fifth race when the bridle on George Wideners Jamieson broke and it ittook took some time to have it repaired All Allof of the riders with the exception of Mack Garner who had the mount on Mrs E J Hodgsons Beguile the ultimate winner dis ¬ mounted when granted permission after the accident accidentThe The start was a good one and Beguile and Mate at once raced away from the oth ¬ ers Mate held Beguile safe to the final furlong but there the son of Dunlin drew away to be an easy winner by two lengths Mate had no trouble in saving second place when Jamison was another seven lengths back and the others were badly strung out
