FAST WORK AT THE DOWNS Betty Derr Covers a Mile in l:4iy5 — Lightning Bolt Training in Satisfactory Manner. LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 2.— That H. P. Gardners Betty Derr, the sterling daughter of the great sire Gallahad III. and Uncles Lassie, will be at her best for the Kentucky Oaks, to be renewed next Saturday, was well demonstrated when she worked a mile in 1:41%, well in hand, here this morning. After running along with keen speed for three-quarters, she was eased slightly going the additional quarters. She clicked off the first three-eighths in :34%, the half in :46%, five-eighths in :59%, and the three-quarters in 1:13. Clyde Van Dusen, trainer of the former, also sent Dixianas Lady Dean, which finished second to Plumage in the Ashland Oaks, over the mile distance in handy fashion, and she was timed in 1:43, the half in :50. Lady Dean is after Kentucky Oaks honors. Still another of the leading candidates for that fixture was seen in action, when Looney and Jones Martha Jones went three-quarters in 1:15 easily. Camp Prince, which John Marsch named for the Kentucky Derby, was on the fast course in company with Prince Atheling, and trainer Milo Shields sent them three-quarters, for which each was timed in 1:14%. They went nicely in hand throughout the trials. Mrs. John Hay Whitneys Lightning Bolt, winner of the Florida Derby, breezed a mile in 1:42%, half in :49%, three-quarters in 1:15. His important summer engagements include the one mile and one-half Latonia Derby.
