Qualifies or Preakness and Kentucky Derby 5 • TWENTY GRAND WINS « Makes Auspicious and Successful Debut in Wood Memorial. ♦ Trilogy Accounts for Colorado Stakes in Colors of Rancocas Stable — ■ Slippery Footing Prevails. ♦ NEW YORK, N. Y., May 2. -Twenty Grand, the first hope of the power f .1 Green-tree stable for the Preakness and the Kentucky Derby, made good brilliantly in the running of the Wood Memorial at Jamaica Saturday. Closing an immense gap in the stretch, the son of St. Germains came away under the whip magnificently, to lead Morton L. Schwartz Clock Tower past the line by half a length, and a half dozen length farther back Mrs. Richard T. Wilsons Camper beat W. R. Coes Polydorus a like distance for third. Then followed G. D. Wideners Condescend, with Robert A. ITairbairns Glastonbury last of the six that raced. The Wood Memorial was a gallop of one mile and seventy yards, with a net value to the winner of 0,200, and it was run in 1:42% over a track that, while fast, was slippery from a drizzling rain, and a dense fog made it impossible to distinguish the horses except in the front stretch. This was the big event of an excellent Saturday program, the best of the Metropolitan Jockey Club meeting, and the Colorado Stakes, a companion feature for juveniles, saw victory for the Rancocas silks with Trilogy the winner. DISAGREEABLE WEATHER. The disagreeable weather did not prevent an immense throng from attending. The running of the Wood Memorial, the race that started William Woodwards Gallant Fox on his road to the championship last year, left no doubt of the high quality of Twenty Grand and the magnificent manner in which he finished the final furlong, to snatch victory from what seemed certain defeat, proved his high courage. Seldom, indeed, has ever a colt shown such game-ness in a first start of the year, and it was his first. After the finish, the son of St. Germains was worked out the full mile and a furlong in 1:81%, and the race should do no end of good in his preparation for the 0,000 Preakness and the Kentucky Derby of like value, for which he is heading. The six that raced left in good alignment, though Polydorus stumbled slightly, while Twenty Grand hung as he left, and was slow to be under way. Clock Tower, on the other hand, was off like a sprinter, and Pete Walls, making excellent use of that advantage, headed for the first turn with a goodly lead. Condescend was after him with Camper racing third, and as they came to the corner Twenty Grand was fourth, but well back of these and plainly not in a racing stride. HOLDS ON TO ADVANTAGE. Well out in front of the field Walls took hold of Clock Tower, "and the son of Snob II., racing as he never raced before, held his advantage with little trouble. Condescend was following him, and four lengths before Camper, which in turn was three lengths before Twenty Grand. Then in the run through the straight of the back stretch Clock Tower continued to draw out from his rivals until he was three and then four lengths to the good, and Twenty Grand was dropping back until he seemed to be hopelessly beaten. Condescend was doing his best in second place, while Camper was going along steadily in third place. Never weakening, Clock Tower was five lengths clear as ne rounded into the short stretch, but Kurtsinger was at work on Twenty Grand, and the colt had moved up to fourth place, but still lengths back. Then he raced to Condescend, next up on Camper, and in the last fujiong, under hands and heels, he wore down the flying Clock Tower until he swept over the line the winner by half a length. It was a truly magnificent Continued on tucnty-first page. TWENTY GRAND WINS Continued from first page. victory when the wonderful run in the final furlong is considered. When the field was called to the post for the Colorado Stakes, the five furlong dash for the juveniles, the fog had settled down to such an extent that the horses could not be distinguished. This resulted in a victcsy for Trilogy, from the Rancocas Stable. He was an easy winner over Curacao, from the Greentree Stable, with J. A. Hales My Purchase third. The race had a net value of ,075 to the winner. Little time was lost at the barrier, and the start was a good one. The nine vanished into the fog in close order. When they turned into the stretch it could be seen tiat Trilogy was showing the way by a good margin, with Common, the George D. Widener starter, second, and Curacoa and My Purchase following closely. In the final furlong Trilogy drew away to be winner by three lengths while Curacao gained fast to race into second place and My Purchase wore down Common, which tired in the final drive. Frank Browns Sims came back with another good race when he was winner of the opening three-quarters dash for platers. He was going away at the end to beat Clare-mont and Charon. The start was good and Sims was more alert than the others, though he did not enjoy his lead for long, when Munden rushed Claremont out to show the way, and Morheart right at the heels of Sims with Charon another two lengths back. Claremont continued to show the way to the stretch, but there Harvey brought him up on the outside and Munden went to a drive. Claremont responded, but Harvey had only to sit still and give Sims a hand ride to have him over the line winner by two lengths. In the meantime Charon was steadily making up ground and, while an eighth out Black and Blue seemed a sure third at the finish, Callahan was no help and Charon went by him in the closing strides to take third by a length. Jockey Froggatte will be an absentee for several days. The injury to his foot when he was crowded into the fence is improving.
