SURF BOARDS WORKOUT NEW YORK, N. Y., May 2.— Instead of starting Surf Board in the Wood Memorial Stakes to bear Twenty Grand company for the honor of the popular Greentree Stable silks, James Rowe worked the son of Pen nant at Belmont Park. His task was a mile and a furlong in 1:54% and he was breezing all the way in a fashion to pronouce his progress towards the Preakness Stakes all that could be desired. He ran the first half in :50, the six furlongs in 1:16% and the mile in 1:41%. St. Brideaux, another stable-mate, was sent over the same route in 1:58 with the first six furlongs in 1:18 and the mile in 1:44.
