Probable Field for Preakness Stakes 5 ♦ Not More Than Twelve Likely to Start for 0,000 Prize * Greentree Stable Holds Strong Hand in Twenty Grand, Surf Board and Anchors Aweigh— Equipoise in Public Trial Today at Pimlico BALTIMORE, Md., May 5. — With only four more days intervening before the running of the 0,000 Preakness, the big three-year-old spring feature of the Maryland Jockey Club, the prospects are that not more than twelve starters will contest for the rich prize. Not a filly or a western-owned representative is among the probable contestants. Mrs. Katherine Hitts Sun Meadow developed a cough and has been declared out of the running and Richard Carman made it known that the Nevada Stock Farms Siskin would be unable to start because of a lame shoulder. Among the certain starters at this time are C. V. Whitneys Equipoise, the Greentree Stables splendid trio of Twenty Grand, Surf Board and Anchors Aweigh, A. C. Bostwicks Mate, Admiral Cary Graysons Happy Scot, W. M. Jeffords Aegis, Seagram Stables Soil Gills, Belair Studs Ormesby, and W. J. Salmons Ladder. There may be several additions before post time. The Greentree Stables trio has gained a large following, and many expect the representatives of the establishment to carry off the rich prize. Twenty Grands spectacular victory in the Woods Memorial at Jamaica last Saturday, created a wonderful impression, and keen judges of horseflesh predict that this colt may duplicate the performances of Gallant Fox last year. All three of the Greentree Stables candidates were galloped today. Twenty Grand, bay son of St. Germans and Bonus, accompanied by Anchors Aweigh, were first on the track. They went a half in :23M , :35%, :48t5, where Twenty Grand was taken up, with Anchors Aweigh galloping on out to the five-eighths pole in 1:02*5. IN FINE FETTLE. After seeing his first pair put in the ring to cool out, trainer Rowe brought out St. Brideaux, bay son of St. Germans and Panache, and Surf Board, chestnut son of Pennant and La Plance, and they whirled a half in :24, :36, :48%. Rowe holds one of the most powerful hands any trainer has ever possessed for both the Preakness and Kentucky Derby, and it may be that he will saddle the favorite for both three-year-old stakes. It was stated Monday that C. V. Whitneys Equipoise would be a starter in the Preakness. The great son of Pennant had worked a mile and a quarter in 2:11, the first mile in the fast time of 1:41%, convincingly proving that he had fully recovered from the attack of azatoria which caused him to fail dismally in the recent running of the Chesapeake Stakes at Havre de Grace. The Whitney colt is scheduled for a public trial Wednesday, between races, at Pimlico, and then it is expected a definite announcement will be made as to whether or not the winter favorite for the big race will go to the post Saturday. If a western owned representative goes in the Preakness, it will be H. Teller Archibalds Dark Hero, black Son of Herodot — Sunwina, which is an eligible for both the Preakness and the Derby. He was also on the track this morning, and went three-eighths in :SK and :35%.
