I | , . . I SWEEP ALL AND BOYS HOWDY Work Well for Preliminary Purse, Fridays Special Race for Kentucky Derby Candidates. LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 5.— Sweep All and Boys Howdy, almost certain Kentucky Derby starters of Charles T. Fisher and Harry C. Hatch, respectively, came through impressively in trials over the mile distance at Churchill Downs this morning. Both were on the fast track at an early hour, and after Sweep All had turned a mile in 1:4113 handily and eased up one mile and one eighth in 1:56%, the Hatch colt encircled the mile course in 1:42%, also going well in hand. Trainer L. Gentry had G. Riley up on Boys Howdy, and drilling without a pacemaker, the son of Bubbling Over and Batter Cake went the quarter in :25%, three eighths in :37as, half in :49%, five-eighths in 1:02%, and three quarters in 1:15%. He pulled up in fine condition and Gentry expects to start him in the mile preliminary purse, a condition event for horses of the Derby age, on the Friday program. During the first seven-eighths of the trial. Sweep All was accompanied by Deemster, but widely outspeeded the latter and when Deemster finished the seven furlongs in 1:30%, Sweep All was far in front. Sent into the workout at the stand and wearing blinkers, Sweep All ran the half mile in :47%, and the three-quarters in 1:15. He finished out the mile very strong and was almost eased to a walk when the watchers caught him at the end of a mile and an eighth in 1.56%. Clarence McCrossen was astride the grand looking son of Sweep and Nettie Hastings and in his opinion the Dix-iana colt is just finding his racing legs. Van Dusen did not equip the colt with blinkers for either of his races this year and plans to use them for the first time when Sweep All meets the best of the western Derby eligibles in Fridays preliminary purse. Spanish Play, Knebelkamp and Morris good son of Spanish Prince II., was "opened up" three-eighths in :39 today, and tomorrow will be set down for a brisk trial. He is another scheduled starter in the preliminary, as is Joseph Leiters Prince D Amour, which worked a mile in 1:46 handily over the Doug- las Park track this morning. The Leiter hopeful, accompanied by Princess Tell, ran the quarter in :25%, half in :50%, and three-quarters in 1:18%. Theodore E. Muellers Pittsburgher, present leader of the western Derby forces, and Griffin Watkins Insco will have their final preparation for the preliminary purse tomorrow morning. «
