NUCKOLS FILLY SCORES « Daughter of Stimulus Carries James to Louisville Victory. « W. C. Weants Prince Fox Furnishes Outstanding Surprise of Day — Porters Dream Graduates. 4 LOUISVILLE. Ky., May 5.— Cousin Jo, Charles Nuckols good daughter of Stimulus and Gentle, just about clinched the post of favorite for Saturdays renewal of the 0,000 added Kentucky Oaks when she was a cantering winner over eleven other eligibles for that important fixture. The filly accounted for the Lilies of the Valley Purse, best race on todays excellent program at Churchill Downs. Eugene James brought the lightly regarded winner home six lengths clear of Town Limit. Silver Beauty, a length back, got a nose decision for third place over Laila Wild and Lady Dean. Under restraint during the first three quarters, the winner alternated with Town Limit in showing the way, but when JaiVies permitted her to show her speed. Town Limit was overwhelmed and rapidly lost ground during the last quarter. At the end of seven eighths Cousin Jo had an advantage of three lengths and while James tightened his hold in the last furlong, the restraint did not prevent her from increasing her margin to six lengths. Badly outrun for three quarters. Silver Beauty came through with belated speed and getting through on the inside of Laila Wild and Lady Dean, got up for third place. LADY DEAN RUNS AWAY. Laila Wild was a factor after a half mile, while Lady Dean had little chance while pocketed on the inside during the first five-eighths and could not get to the leaders after working her way to the outside in the stretch. Lady Dean ran away three-sixteenths with R. Finnerty while on the way to the post. The temperamental Martha Jones eliminated herself when she refused to race kindly after reaching the final half mile in a forward position. Cousin Jo ran the distance iu the good time of l:38a3, and her impressive effort was her first test of the year. She triumphed before an average sized crowd as cloudy weather held down the attendance. Mrs. Payne Whitneys Greentree Stable colors were seen in their first triumph during the meeting when Justinian came through with his first winning effort in some time to account for the honors in the Jefferson Town Purse, the secondary feature. C. E. Allen directed the victor to the finish an easy winner, while Up Above outstayed the poorly ridden Chimney Sweep by a nose for second place. After setting a fast pace for a half mile and when leading into the stretch Up Above, ridden by H. Schutte, bore out badly, forcing both the winner and Chimney Sweep to go almost to the center of the track. K. Russell raced Chimney Sweep, one of the outstanding favorites of the day, on the inside and in third place during the first half mile, but elected to ease him back and to the outside for the stretch run and this cost the Whitney racer much ground. FAST RUN RACE. While being forced wide Justinian gradually wore down Up Above and, taking the lead, pulled away in the final fifty yards. He ruled third choice and ran the distance in 1:11%. Prince Atheling, second choice, tired after moving up meekly inside the stretch turn and Chimney Sweep had a margin of five lengths over him at the end. Another of the two-year-olds in the E. B. McLean stable graduated when Porters Dream, a daughter of The Porter, accounted for the opening dash for maidens of her sex in a driving finish with Fluent. The latter narrowly failed to outstay the McLean representative after racing in the lead to the final sixteenth of the four and one-half furlongs. Marcelet was the one to save third place, while Prefer led the others. After beginning slowly, the winner, ridden by J. McCoy, got a lucky break on the turn, where she obtained room on the in- i Continued on twenty-second page. j I I NUCKOLS FILLY SCORES Continued from first page. side, and rushing into second place just inside the stretch turn, went on to wear down Fluent in a long drive. Marcelet and Prefer always were in the van of the others. Sewell Combs sent a fit horse to the post in Fiddler among the twelve medium grade older platers which started over three-quarters in the second race and the son of Wild-air was an easy winner. Knight Commander finished second and Typhoon third. Fiddler forced Hot Shots pace for a half mile, following which H. Fisher permitted him to go to the front and, drawing away, he raced the final sixteenth under restraint. At the end he was one and one-half lengths clear of Knight Commander, which held on well after racing forwardly from the start and Typhoon, which finished with the most speed, headed Agitator for third place when making the final strides. Crossbones, the E. B. McLean starter which had considerable backing, had only limited chance due to his failure to obtain ample room during the stretch run and with better luck he might have been a formidable factor at the end.
