USE AUSTRALIAN MACHINE Pari -Mutuel Machine From the Land Down Under Selected for Hialeah Park Course. i NEW YORK, N. Y., May 25.— The Australian totalizer, which Joseph E. Widenei has decided upon for use at the Hialeah course of the Miami Racing Association, ■will be the first adoption of the machine in this country, and its purpose is calculated to give the public a greater confidence in the operation of the pari-mutuel system of ■wagering. As its name suggests, this machine is capable of mechanically keeping a record of all operations in the mutuel selling windows, and in this fashion inform the public right through the wagering period of the odds that are offered against each starter. On many of the American courses where the pari-mutuel system of wagering obtains, there are frequent displays of the approximate odds against each horse, but they are only approximate, and furnished at frequent intervals during the wagering by calculators. There are various types of the totalizing machines, and they have been used in Australia and England, and recently one was installed on the Rowley mile course at Newmarket. The Australian is one that is used at Longchamps, and it has been practical. The machine is naturally rather an intricate one, and it will take something like four months to install it at Hialeah. Recently Colonel Matt J. Winn sent manager Wiedekamp, of the Kentucky mutuel department, abroad to study the operation of the English machines with a view of adopting them for Kentucky and Chicago, and it is possible that in another year they will be installed, but the contract has been given for the Australian machines at Hialeah and they will be the first installed in this country.
