i i , CONNAUGHT CUP HANDICAP * Results in One of Most Spectacular Contests in History of Course. 1 Marine Emerges Victorious Over Bad News Bob and Storm By Small Margin, and After Hard Fought Race. • TORONTO, Ont., May 25.— The Connaught Cup Handicap, listed as the main attraction for the afternoon, resulted in one of the most bitterly fought events staged at the Woodbine course, and the result proved exceedingly popular when Marine, from the Mount Royal Stable, emerged victorious. His score was brought about by the shortest of margins when he received the judges decision over Bad News Bob, which performed for H. C. Hatch. Third was accounted for by Mrs. H. Pynes colorbearer Storm. Eager Play, the representative of the Seagram Stable, easily led home Mrs. E. Glasscos homebred Mr. Gaiety. Marine was backed into a prohibitive choice and in contrast to his previous engagements raced along with the pace from the start. F. Mann rode a very patient race and waited until leaving the back stretch before making any effort to go to Bad News Bob and Storm, which were in command. Forging to the front at the last furlong pole, Marine was forced to withstand a furious drive to add his name to the roster of winners of this valuable prize. Immediately following the running, Lord Bessborough, who witnessed the running from the stewards stand, descended to present trainer Harry Giddings with a replica of the gold cup on behalf of the owners of the Mount Royal Stable. Another success was scored by the W. S. Kilmer stable when Dark Thorn led home a shifty band of juveniles that met in the opening dash at four and one-half furlongs. Installed the choice for the short sprint, the Kilmer filly gave her supporters little concern when she followed in close attendance of Annie A. for three furlongs, assumed command when ready and at the end retained a two lengths margin over C. V. Whitneys Even Up. G. L. Goodacres Annie A. managed to land third by a scant neck over L. M. Sheas Deserve. The Helter Skelter Steeplechase, a race at two miles over fifteen jumps, resulted in victory for the J. Bosley-G. M. Hendrie combination when Billycock landed major honors in a drive over Nazor from the Eastland Farm Stable, with the winners running mate Royal Doulton saving the short end of the purse from the stoutly supported choice The Red Knight. There were ten to compete and Royal Doulton went out to lead the field and enjoyed his pacemaking duties until well into ♦he stretch for the final two jumps. Billycock, however, by being reserved off the pace, was not to be denied in that final dash and the last jump had displaced his running mate to be rewarded with victory. His triumph took place by a length, with Nazor five lengths in advance of Royal Doulton, which in turn led The Red Knight by a like margin. The initial score of the meeting for the Continued on second page. CONNAUGHT CUP HANDICAP Continued from first page J Seagram Stable took place with the decision Of the six furlongs sprint styled The Hampton Plate, when Toe Dance made good in her debut. There were eleven others to oppose the three-year-old daughtr of Digit— Casino Girl. Second place went to R. S. McLaughlins Scherzando, another first starter. Humberside landed third for J. W« Miller, while J. C. Fletchers Ichitaro completed the distance before the others. Toe Dance dominated the running save for the first furlong. At the end, while tiring at a fast rate, she was just a length and one-half to the good, while Scherzando beat Humberside by a length for second honors. George De Mar, the aged campaigner which performs for the Wild Rose Farms, lived up to expectations in the mile and one-sixteenth, of the fifth race, for which he was favored* In a drive, under the handling of S. Stret-ton, he was able to lead J. Bosleys Guilford across the finishing mark to register by a length, while Poison Ivy had little difficulty in earning third before C. S. Mitchells The-one and the four others that met for conclusions.
