Rich Withers Stakes Today t Jamestown and Nine Other High Class Three-Year-Olds to Clash in Fifty-Sixty Running of Popular Belmont Fixture 1 NEW YORK, N. Y., May 29.— For the fifty-sixth running of the famous old Withers Stakes of the Westchester Association at Belmont Park Saturday afternoon, ten have been named through the entry box. Should they all go to the post for the mile race, as is expected, the stake will have a gross value of 1,500. When A. J. Joyner brought back Jamestown so magnificently for George D. Widener there was some fear that the presence of the son of St. James in the field might deter =8some ®some of of the the other other eligibles eligibles from from starting, starting, =8some ®some of of the the other other eligibles eligibles from from starting, starting, but so many of the eligibles have been brought up to the race so brilliantly that a surprising number are named. And it is a field that abounds in speed that will make certain a swiftly run renewal should the weather and track conditions be favorable. The weather man has promised thunderstorms for the Memorial Day sport, but there is always a hope that he has missed his guess and that there will be nothing to prevent the running being one of the most notable in the history of the old fixture, that was first run back in 1874. Those that will oppose Jamestown, which is conceded as the one that must be beaten, are Surf Board and Anchors Aweigh, from the Greentree Stable; Daniel C. Sands My Broom, W. R. Coes Polydorus, Benjamin Blocks Morstone, Morton L. Schwartz Clock Tower, the Flying Horse Farms Commuter, Walter J. Salmons Ladder and Mrs. Kath-erine E. Hitts Sun Meadow. Each one in this notable company has shown a complete readiness for the question and seldom has there been a running with such an abundance of speed engaged. Morstone has proven himself a colt of electrical speed, though there is a question of his carrying it over the mile distance in such company. Ladder, which was third in the Preakness, behind Mate and Twenty Grand, is another speedy colt, and Polydorus, the hope of the Coe silks, is also a sprinter of parts. Surf Board will probably be used as pace-i maker for Anchors Aweigh, and the others cannot afford to permit him to draw out into much of a lead with a recollection of his victory in the Kings County Handicap. This fellow did not run his race in the Ken-i tucky Derby, but he has improved greatly since his return from Louisville and is sure to run a better race tomorrow afternoon. Few of the eligibles have been showing more speed in trials than Clock Tower and Continued on tiventv-first page. i • ■ , : i I ! 3 i - ;, £ e r - - i - 1 I J l 5 1 ] j ! , ] j i j . ! , j 7 y 1 : * J | j t J | ■ J j j J * 5 * 3 3 2 8 7 [VALUABLE WITHERS STAKES Continued from first page. in fact there is not a horse of the ten that does not seem eligible for a six furlongs sprint among the best. Of course, before the running Jamestown will be taken as the standard by which the others will be rated. This son of St. James is not only able to closely follow any pace, but he has shown an entire readiness for the mile route. Then there is Sun Meadow, which was denied starting in the Preakness by reason of an unfortunate illness shortly before that date. Commuter is placed ambitiously, as is My Broom, but both are colts of high quality that have been steadily im- proving and have earned a try for the great prize. Most of the candidates were out yesterday morning in a final for the big event Surf Board and St. Brideaux, a stablemate, were sent along the ground for an easy half mile in :48. Sun Meadow, which has been brought up to the race cleverly by Rodrock, had five furlongs as his speed test and he worked in :59%, in a manner to leave no doubt of his complete readiness. Max Hirsch asked more of Clock Tower when he permitted his charge to breeze a mile in 1:40%. This colt has had several convinc- ing speed trials of late and this mile was ample to prove his fitness. "Jack" Joyner has been keeping James- town on edge since his brilliant effort of last Wednesday under silks and there is no doubt of his readiness. The son of St. James has been ready to race for some time, and the seven furlongs handicap he won so easily was his final for the Withers. He has galloped since then regularly and the race is sure to have accomplished much good. Unless there should come a marked change in weather conditions, the track will I be at its best for the running and prepara- tions have been made for the handling of the greatest crowd that ever assembled at the course, which may readily be expected by reason of the double holiday. There had been some hope that James Rowe would elect to start Twenty Grand against Jamestown, but the Greentree silks ; had been well represented by Surf Board 1 and Anchors Aweigh. The last named is not an altogether dependable colt, but he is of high quality and should he race kindly r he cannot fail to be a close contender. Then, of course, Surf Board with a greater dependability is a colt well calculated to upset some of the calculation. Each one of the ten has established recent . form that is well known by the students of • racing, with the exception of Sun Meadow. ; This good son of Sun Briar and Red Clover has been away from the races, recuperating r from a slight illness, but the works reports ; leave no doubt of his fitness and ne is unquestionably a colt of high quality. It is admitted that Morstone, by his re- cent effort, hardlv measures up to the mile distance, but he has a flight of sprint speed that may easily play an important : part in the decision of the race. He must be caught to be beaten, and it is more than i likely that the one detailed for that job may not share in the money, division. Then all the speed of the field does not begin and end with Morstone. There are I others possessed of that qualification, but - after all of the sprinting speed has been [ expended it is safe to promise that the win- ner will still have Jamestown to beat. *
