A. C. BOSTWICKS MATE RULES FAVORITE 9 — ♦ Preakness Stakes Winner Logical Choice for American Derby —Sun Meadow Sure of Large Following-Spanish Play Regarded as Best Western Representative—Field of Twelve Expected to Face Barrier . * HOMEWOOD, 111., June 18.— Barring a surprise entry or two, twelve of the one hundred and forty-eight three-year-old eligible for the fixture will comprise the starting field in the twenty-third Ameriean Derby, of 0,000 added, at Washington Park Saturday The imposing, popular sized field will be headed by Mate, A. C. Bostwicks winner of the Preakness Stakes; Sun Meadow owned by Kathenne Elkins Hitt and second to Twenty Grand in the Belmont Stakes, in which Jamestown was a starter; Knebelkamp and Morris Spanish Play, winner of the Louisiana Derby; Lightning Bolt, Mrs. John Hay Whitneys victor in the Florida Derby Boys Howdy which captured honors under the H. C. Hatch colors in the Derby Trial at Washington Park Tuesday, and Walter J Salmons Ladder and third in the Preakness and second to Jamestown at the end of the Withers mile. Others in the list of certain participants are Gallaher and Combs Oswego, one of the best of the western juveniles last season; T. E. Muellers Pittsburgher, beaten western favorite in the Kentucky Derby, but successful in less important engagements at Lexington, Churchill Downs and Washington Park; Bernard B. Jones* Knights Call, another prominent in his juvenile year and only recently fully recovered from injuries received at Agua Caliente; Morpheus, the Syufy and Noyes representative, second to Boys Howdy in the Derby Trial; C. C. Van Meters Joey Bibb and Madden Brothers The Mongol. ALL IN FINE FETTLE. All are at their best for the gruelling race over one mile and one-quarter and it is expected to prove one of the most thrilling contests of the year, East or West. Mate appears the logical choice, but carrying top weight of 126 pounds and conceding from five to eight pounds to all of the sturdy rivals ready to oppose him, he has a mighty task to accomplish if he is to be returned the winner. Sun Meadow has a great following, many flocking to the son of Sun Briar and Red Clover following his fine Belmont Stakes performance and eminent judges look for him to rule a strong second choice. Sun Meadow gets in with 118 pounds, eight less than the Bostwick colt. Spanish Play appears the most popular of the western entries, and Boys Howdy greatly increased his following for the prize when he led throughout in the nine furlongs Derby trial. This latter Canadian-owned candidate seems extremely well suited by the Washington Park track, and Lloyd Gentry, his trainer, is confident the colt will be a factor. In the trial Boys Howdy turned the tables on Spanish Play, which led him in the Kentucky and Florida Der-bys, and getting three pounds from the Knebelkamp and Morris horse, which carries 121 pounds, has an excellent chance to again defeat the western favorite Saturday. Lightning Bolt is another with 121 pounds, while Oswego, Ladder, Pittsburgher, Knights Call, The Mongol, Morpheus and Joey Bibb, like Sun Meadow and Boys Howdy, will have up 118 pounds each. GROSS VALUE 6,700. With twelve starters the fixture will have a gross value of 6,700, and Colonel M. J. Winn, executive director of the Washington Park Jockey Club, has a handsome trophy, valued at ,500, as a special award for the owner of the victorious horse. All but 0,000 of the gross stake goes to the winner, the mentioned amount representing second, third and fourth money of ,000, ,000 and ,000. The final trials of The Mongol, Joey Bibb and Ladder and arrival at the scene of the race of Sun Meadow were important activities today. Sun Meadow, accompanied by a stable pony, and in charge of trainer Tommy Roderick, was transported from Arlington Park, where he arrived Monday, by motor van. He received final preparations this afternoon. Jockey Earl Steffen, the Hart Stable rider, today was engaged to ride Sun Meadow Saturday. Owner-trainer Van Meter decided against starting Joey Bibb in todays feature in favor of working him one mile and an eighth, and the son of Chatterton came through nicely when he ran the distance in 1:55 under a handy hold by James Smith, and galloped out an additional furlong in 2:09%. Black Comet accompanied him the final three-quarters of the nine furlongs work. Van Meter closed with Smith to ride the colt Saturday. Continued on twenty-third vaae. BOSTWICKS MATE FAVORITE Continued from first page. Over at Lincoln Fields The Mongol continued to show to advantage when he worked the Derby route in 2:07% under only mild urging. The son of Sir Martin and Yellowjacket is right at his best in the opinion of "Chuck" Walker, veteran negro trainer, who prepared him for the race. Ladder, outsider among the three eastern colts after the prize, was breezed a mile this morning in 1:44%, the half mile in :51% and the three-quarters in 1:18. Louie Schae-fer, who rode him in all engagements this year and pilots the son of Ladkin Saturday, directed him in the light but beneficial trial. Sun Meadow gave a magnificent display of his exceptional speed and warned of his proving a very formidable contender, if not the winner in the American Derby, when he worked three-quarters in 1:12, well in hand, and galloped out seven-eighths in 1:26 and the mile in l:4iy5, between the third and fourth race. The well made bay son of Sun Briar had his brilliant final preparation for Saturdays race under the direction of trainer Rodrock, and with blinkers a part of his equipment and what appeared at least several pounds less than his Derby weight of 118 pounds up, he ran the quarter in :22%, half mile in :46% and the five-eighths in :59Vs. After galloping out from the three-quarters to complete seven-eighths, he was eased almost to a canter as he traversed the eighth furlong of his remarkable trial. Preparations for accommodations and handling of a crowd of 60,000 or more were virtually completed by Colonel Winn and C. W. Hay, general manager of the track, today. They look for a complete sell out of all reserved seats and boxes and reported scores of requests for such accommodations from enthusiasts throughout the country. From the racing department, in charge of Charles F. Price, came an announcement that the field for the first race on Derby day will be called to the post at 2 oclock and that scratch time the same day will terminate at Washington Park at 7:30 a. m. and at Lincoln Fields fifteen minutes earlier. Jockeys for all starters that day must be named at scratch time. The probable Derby field follows: Horse. Wt. Jockey. Mate 126 G. Ellis Lightning Bolt J.21 C. Kurtsinger Spanish Play 121 C. E.
