PLAYTIME IN FAST WORK Covers Mile in 1:41% in Preparation for Independence Handicap — Abe Furst Speedy. LATONIA, Ky., June 18.— With the La-tonia course at its best, many of the candidates for the six stakes to be decided during the coming thirty-one day meeting, which starts here Saturday, June 27, came in for great admiration when they went through their trials in fast time this morning. Charles Bacharach, who races under the nom de course of the Southland Stable, appears to hold a good hand in the running of the Independence Handicap when his Playtime, winner of the New Years Handicap at New Orleans, and second to Gallant Knight in the 1930 Latonia Derby, went a handy mile in 1:41 Vs. He was accompanied by Disturb, a stablemate, and the pair, breaking from the three-quarters post, worked back. Playtime was timed the quarter in :23%, the three-eighths in :35%, and the half mile in :48%. At that stage his exercise boy took a strong hold and he ran the three-quarters in 1:14% and the seven-eighths in 1:27%. Disturb was driving to keep in close attendance. Trainer Daniels also called on Old Jefferson and Bachelor Hal, candidates for the Cincinnati Trophy. The former ran an easy half in :55% and pulled up the three-quarters in 1:25. Bachelor Hal, which broke six lengths back, was timed the four furlongs in :56. Furst, Bauer and Hukills Abe Furst showed one of the best works of the current training season when he went a handy three-eighths in :35. The quarter was covered in :23. My Prince, yet to face the barrier, accompanied him. Prior to the work of Abe Furst, Castle Cliff, also an eligible for the Trophy, ran three-eighths in :35%. The Furst and Bauer candidate was in hand all the way.
